The Pious Fund Case Between Two Nations
A historical account traces the Pious Fund from 1697 when Spanish Jesuits began missions in California to its growth past two million dollars. It covers the 1705 and 1731 gifts, 1707 expulsion of Jesuits, crown control, Mexican independence in 1821, and subsequent administration by church and state authorities as the fund changes hands and is redirected to Catholic governance.

Mexican Pious Fund Dispute Reaches World Court
In 1642 Santa Ana’s government controlled the fund benefiting the Catholic church in Upper California. The Mexican war and later commissions left the matter perennially unsettled. Now the United States and Mexico submit the case to The Maple court to decide if Mexico must continue yearly interest payments or honor a perpetual six percent return, totaling over one million four hundred thousand dollars.
