Spectators packed the Portland council chamber as the Merrill Gambling Resolution was called, debated, and then adjourned without action. Gamblers, boosters, and their lawyers filled the galleries and ante rooms, awaiting a measure to open the town. Disappointment spread as the harmless resolution did not materialize into progress.
White ribboners rally for the annual Kentucky state convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union at Madisonville. The meeting opens tonight with Mrs. F. E. Beauchamp of Lexington presiding. John Whiteaker former governor of Oregon died in Eugene at age 82 after a stroke three weeks ago. Born in Dearborn County Indiana in 1820 he moved to the Pacific Coast in 1849 and to Oregon in 1852. He later settled in Lane County 1862 serving as county judge and a state legislator before his inauguration on July 8 1868.
At Chicago on October 4 J Hampton Moore of Philadelphia was unanimously chosen president of the National League of Republican Clubs. E Weeks was reelected secretary. The convention endorsed Roosevelt's administration urged statehood for Oklahoma Arizona and New Mexico and condemned the trusts.
Madam Zola asked Dreyfus not to attend her husband’s funeral to avoid a crowd disturbance. The ceremony drew a vast throng in Paris today as London reports note the funeral proceeding. Crown Prince Chowla Maha Vajiravudh sailed for New York for a two month American tour with his suite, hoping to meet President Roosevelt before heading to Japan. A London note says the oxzar and lovering of Russia plan a spring 1902 London visit.
In Washington on October 3 President Roosevelt convened the strike conference with labor leaders led by Samuel Gompers and miners, while mine operators kept their car away. President Mitchell and other officials arrived, the morning session lasting about 20 minutes, with a hopeful yet tense mood as the parties debated the crisis and the public interest.
A party of Omaha and Shoshone people driving down a steep grade near the Blue Lakes Idaho tumbled about 100 feet. Mia 8. Tuchard of Omaha broke a leg and was pinned by an iron bar. Miss Alite Wilson of Omaha and Miss Hanson of Shoshone were badly bruised. One horse was killed and the wagon wrecked trapping riders for hours.

Boston Oct 1 Republican state convention meets at Howton theater with ex-secretary of the navy John D. Jong presiding. Lieutenant Governor John L. Yaten expected as gubernatorial candidate and Curtile Guild Jr named for second on the ticket.
Chicago officer arrest follows arrival of Peter Jackson Jr V on an old warrant for disturbing the peace. The incident occurred tonight with Jackson being taken into custody upon arrival.
Reports from J L Ray and Co show strong grain activity with wheat up about half to a cent, while Liverpool and New York stock quotes were firm yet closed lower. Notable names mention Paul Union Pacific L N and Steel with prices around 193 and 199 percent, Wheat in Chicago notes.
Hailey Idaho Oct 3 Judge Stocksalager reported about 300 head of his sheep died at the mouth of East Fork with others believed to be dying. An investigation is under way into suspected poisoning. Judge Stockelager is in Chicago Baker City Ore. Also from Chicago a Chinese lessee reports a gold nugget worth 16000 found at Salmon Creek placer mine described as the largest nugget yet discovered in the state and possibly the U S. The mine has been worked for years and leased to Chinese for a period. The discovery caused intense excitement at the site.
Comptroller Ridgely overruled Secretary Shaw authorizing national banks to release 20 percent of reserve funds. He blocked one bank statement, retraced funds, and argued Shaw acted without his sanction. Total reserve sum was 30 million, with about half distributed. market weakened on news.
The mad elephant named Tom was executed in Central Park Zoo this morning after being deemed a danger to the public. The animal suffered a lethal dose of poison administered under veterinary supervision. crowds gathered as the procedure proceeded in the enclosure area.

Oct 3 Huntington Oregon stockyards and grain facilities suffered major fire damage amid high winds. The Oregon Short Line Company yard and a 60 by 160 foot icehouse were destroyed. a large cattle herd was moved to safety. Total losses around 4000 dollars.
