London reports an American owned general cargo steamer named Chemung, sailing from New York on November 8 with a crew of 25, sinking after being torpedoed or struck by a mine. No details yet on casualties or formal confirmation from New York owners.

Mrs Mattie Ladow longtime Pendleton resident and widow of Congressman George Ladow who served Oregon in Washington about 40 years ago died at her Beauregard street home after a seven day illness. She was 72, arrived in Pendleton in the 1860s, active in local affairs and a charter member of the Current Literature Club. Survivors include sons Frank and Lewis Ladow and nephew G T Ladow, with several siblings and other relatives listed.
Arctic owls arrive in Umatilla County for the first time in years with a half dozen reported in the past week. Despite protection under Oregon law, at least three have been killed. The birds, native to far north regions, are rare south of their usual range and are linked to severe winter conditions.

They claim exorbitant prices arise from shortages and speculation and urge the government to curb exports to ensure adequate supply for Americans. The appeal warns that a boycott may spread rapidly.
Lord French announced two Zeppelins destroyed last night one fell flaming on the Durham coast and the other nine miles off Norfolk. Both fell into the ocean after aerial and gunfire attacks as coast batteries and navy planes engaged them. Spectators witnessed the dramatic air battle with cheers as the blazing raiders fell.
