Wood War Looms Over Inland Empire Wood Trade

Walla Walla reports a looming wood war as an Oregon firm expands into the district selling at eight dollars per cord, undercutting local dealers who say they cannot sell for less than nine fifty. The rival firm, with about 4000 acres of timber near La Grande and 2000 cords ready, ships to local dealers who resist. W. B. Kingle, local manager, says dealers alone prevented entry by sticking to the higher price. The Oregon firm runs stores in Baker City and La Grande supplying large camps with groceries and provisions, sometimes taking wooden payment. Nearby farmers in Summit and Gifford report grain moisture issues delaying winter plowing and an uptick in corn cultivation on summer fallow for stock feed.
