Oregon loses nearly a million yearly from mongrel breeding

Oregon horsemen waste about 1 million dollars annually by breeding to grade and mongrel stallions instead of purebreds. Professor E J Potter of the Oregon Agricultural College estimates 60,000 foals are born yearly with 26,600 from purebreds and 20,000 from grade or mongrel sires. Net loss to the industry tallies around 749 thousand dollars as inferior sires reduce colt value and market demand remains weak. County treasurer G W Bradley plans alfalfa expansion while hay prices rise and sheep numbers grow in Hermiston, with straw scarce and wheat markets inching higher.
