New Haven Conn Nov 23 Harvard defeated Yale 20 to 0 in the traditional gridiron clash. The Crimson struck in the first and third quarters as the ball dominated Yale territory. Bleak betting favored Harvard with large wagers and an estimated 30 000 in attendance watched Harvard extend its series advantage.
John Patriota, accused of slaying his brother in law Saul Valsiccade, was captured by a posse led by Detective Rice in Santa Monica California. The motive remains unknown.
Mrs. Chas D Wynne a former newspaper writer and artist from Billings Montana visits Klamath Falls and reiterates her offer to be executed in place of the five murderers condemned to die at Salem on December 18. She is fifty years old.
Portland reports the American Humane Society convention condemns Alaska dog races as cruel and deplorable and calls for ending dog racing and roundups. Oregon’s Mrs Frank Swanton warns of cruelty and gambling losses with dogs forced to race 400 miles amid bloodied paths.
La Grande Ore Nov 23 Without direct fraud claims Hodgin sues to contest election results for joint senator from Union and Wallowa counties alleging counting errors. He seeks a full recount of all ballots. Knowles named judge to order recount by December 2. Hodgin carried Union by 85 votes but lost overall by four. Attorneys Slater Finn and Shehan Cody to represent Hodgin and Kiddle respectively. First such contest in years.
A rear end crash on the Tacoma Seattle Interurban near Riverton at 9:30 injures twelve, some fatally, as motorman Campbell loses control of a freight car at fifty mph and telescopes the passenger train. Women trapped, ambulances swarm Seattle hospitals. list of injured includes Mrs H L W Jackson and Mrs Walter Thompson among others.
Pendleton edged The Dalles 20 to 14 in a hard fought football game. Pendleton’s backfield excelled with Hinderman and Jordan leading line bursts while McDonald and Kirkpatrick made key receptions. The Dalles rallied late with two fluke touchdowns from Steers and Banard, but Pendleton held on as Huntington and Harriman shone for The Dalles.
Colorado Springs reports John J. Cohan a one armed man arrested on no charge of disturbing the peace. He declares he will kill President-elect Wilson when he gets a chance and is held pending word from secret service operatives. Local officials will examine his mental condition if not needed by the government. He has previously been arrested in New Orleans during Taft's tour and in Chicago during Roosevelt's. Evidence suggests he shadowed Governor Wilson in several campaign sites and possessed clippings about Wilson's ideas.
Portland attorney J. B. McAllister was released on a $1000 bond after being arrested in Medford on a degeneracy charge. Bond posted by lawyer Robert Upton, with McAllister traveling south on train No. 14. He claimed innocence, calling the case a frame up, and intended to meet his partner in Ashland. Also in Salem a 17-year-old witness in a Portland vice scandal, Raymond Smieking, was arrested while returning to testify after confessing to his role. he had recently come from Dayton, Ohio.
In Salem on November 23 Ettor denied District Attorney Atwill's claim that the defendants acted from mercenary motives at Lawrence. The courtroom cheered as the sheriff warned of possible removal. Italians and the W.W. faction show strong sentiment while guards plan to protect the courthouse during jury deliberations. Justice Quinn will give the jury charge this afternoon unless Ettor opts for a final plea in his own behalf.
Handcuffed by officers Carl Reidelbach was moved to the De Crez quarries in San Bernardino county after threatening to dynamite the Central police station. Prison officials do not believe he is insane.
Pendleton Elks Lodge No. 288 will hold its annual memorial service on Sunday December 1 at the Oregon theater. Forest fires rage on Malibu slopes with a large fire crew arriving from Santa Monica. Four ranch houses are destroyed and thousands in damage feared as nearly a thousand men fight the blaze.
Federal and local officers raided a city opium den yesterday afternoon at about 3. Two Chinese men, Joe a merchant on West Alta Street in Chinatown and Lee a patron, were seized during the raid. Officers H. F. McGrath Guy N. Watkins and Deputy Sheriff George Strand led the action. They were bound over to the federal grand jury under $100 bonds each.
Chris Breding and Henry Schultz bought sections seven and eight, township one, south range 32 from George T. Roark and Douglas Belts for around $30,000, with the Schultz home on Willow Street included. E. T. Wade notes extensive inexpensive land transfers in the county, estimating about $100,000 in sales recently.
