History of the Siberian Railway and Its Expansion

The Trans-Siberian Railway arose to develop Siberia with political aims also. Initial plans dated to 1867, imperial order in 1891, and the line reached 3,862 miles in Russia, 1,604 in China. Early speed and cost challenges prompted engineering tweaks and eventual standardization, with freight and passenger speeds improving as lines extended toward Khabarovsk and around Lake Balka. Royal support spurred settlement, cereals dominated exports, and migration rose sharply, aided by committees and wood from imperial forests. Trade with Japan surged 1896 to 1900, with exports and imports expanding markedly.
