Special agents press allegations of land fraud tied to the Umatilla reservation and Fulton amendment. Investigators accuse figures including Raley of pressuring entries and perjury risk while claims involve Senator Fulton’s supposed influence and arrangements with Crow and Raley pastures. Fulton disputes involvement and details of the Meacham meeting and land showing.
The O. R. & N. company bought land from A. A. Todd at Meacham for a new depot on the east side of the tracks. A water tank will be placed on the opposite side. The move aims to increase side track room and speed up the layout. The price was $100 per acre, with J. Bb. Biddy acting as right of way agent. A second note from London reports the Transvaal labor ordinance now bans recruiting Chinese labor and makes Chinamen entry a penal offense.
Buenos Aires Nov 15 The wheat crop this season will fall well below the average. Recent storms have practically destroyed the crop in the Rodarle and Santa Fe districts.
Baptist ministers of Baker City and La Grande arrange a winter series. The first gathering will be in Baker City with Rev. Hall of Pendleton and Rev. Gibson of La Grande assisting Rev. Secor. Subsequent meetings move to La Grande and then to Baker City.
Heavy storm leaves Pendleton with damaged telegraph and telephone lines as winds up to high speed knock out power and cut communication. In Yakima and Naches counties rivers surge, headgates wash out, canals breach, bridges wash away, rail traffic halted, and emergency sessions convened to assess widespread flood damage with thousands in potential losses.
Heavy winds today delay street work by Warren Construction. Rain drenched streets hindered progress on Court Street. five more days are needed to complete the section if weather stays favorable. Once Court Street is finished, crews move to the south end of Main Street with a three week contract target.
Sensational gambling case unfolds as warrants issued for Roy Stewart and Sam Endicott. Stewart already pled guilty and paid a 75 dollar fine. Endicott remains at large amid accusations of robbing witness Biggers of 400 dollars during a Rainier Beer Hall poker game. District Attorney Phelps seeks indictments if Biggers’ claims are upheld. Rainier Beer Hall reputation issues threaten Stewart’s license renewal.
After the specified time the paving plant will be moved to Walla Walla unless a decision is reached by the council and property owners to pave other streets.
Two shipments of about 700 head will be sent to Seattle via W and C R and Northern Pacific. Nate Raines, buying for Frey Brubn Co of Seattle, purchased chiefly from Grant county stockmen. High water on the Northern Pacific delays one train, splitting the sale into two equal loads to be moved as soon as cars are available. Cattle in prime condition will be fed at Toppenish until through service resumes to Seattle.
Weather has reduced logging activity and choppers from the hills. Dealers report limited wood on hand and no orders in two weeks. Idaho seeks to buy wood from Baker City at high prices while Pendleton and Walla Walla see steady increases, with Baker City expected to rise soon.
In St Louis on November 15 the water ways convention convened to promote a deep channel from the lakes to the gulf and will draft recommendations to Congress.
The Oregon State Land Board in Salem ordered 326 forged school land certificates canceled, covering 8130.72 acres with sales certificates issued to purchasers. Payments totaling 40781.20 had been made, all forged under Henry H. Turner, a Salem justice of the peace, involving fraud from 1900 to 1903. Victims like M. T Palmer seek relief from the legislature as avenues of recourse narrow. Turner, charged in land fraud cases, had previously testified for the state.
National attention centers on missing fire relief monies tied to San Francisco’s post disaster aid. President Roosevelt orders pursuit of criminals as Secret Service agents trace nearly a thousand dollars diverted through cash sent by express, money orders, and remittance. Wells Fargo and other firms report funds believed delivered but not received by the Red Cross and local relief committees.
Repairs on the Furnish ditch near Hermiston continue with about 150 men at work. The foundation for the large flume has been weakened in several sections. Sand is being removed and timbers are being set deeper into the ground to provide a stronger base for supporting the flume when the water falls.
Mrs. B. L. Sherwin, grand matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, arrived in Bushee chapter No. 1 for an official visit. A reception at the Masonic hall was held in her honor followed by instruction in the order's secret work. Mrs. Sherwin resides in Ashland.
