Unlucky Mule Ended Miner’s Plunge to Fortune
Tom Pewert, southern California mulehandler, once relied on a stubborn mule named Old Sam to haul supplies 80 miles. When the mule balked on a steep canyon road, Pewert set fire to dry brush beneath the animal, fell into the gorge, and was injured. He later discovered a gold streak while climbing out, worth over 76,000 dollars. He bought Old Sam back after mining profits began.

Idle vessel towed for overhaul for coast transport
The idle ship has been placed on the dry dock for overhaul and to be returned in first class condition under Captain Trimwbricme. It will be used to transport run gowns and various shipments to the coast. Nearly 2,569,000 feet of lumber will be loaded by the four shounard that arrived last night. The five-master is one of the few of that type on the Pacific coast, built last year at Mureha, making its first port visit. The vessel can carry about 1,0000 feet per cargo and will receive cargo at the Portland mill. The Virginia and Mable Gale are traders here, averaging a monthly visit to Portland. Alcoholism and exposure case. A man’s body was found Sunday morning in an alley on South Front Street. The deceased’s name, with two letters in his pocket, appears to be J. H. Burn. He came from the Alum region and had been in Seattle. From signs on the body, it is believed alcohol contributed to his death, possibly amid morphine or similar drug use. He was sober in several days prior and had been lodged at a city hall lodging house before being left on the street. He was about six feet tall, heavily built, with gray hair and mustache, about 50 years old. Death resulted from acute alcoholism and exposure, weakened by drug use.
