Pendleton Wool Market and Eastern Oregon Sheep Industry

Pendleton hosts a thriving wool market with May and June sale dates drawing buyers from the East and foreign markets. Pendleton mills wash and classify wool for export trade, shipping over 7 million pounds last season, with 3 million handled by securing mills. Eastern Oregon boasts high quality wool due to climate, with Merino sheep favored for top wool, lambing in March and April, and potential for expanded flocks as diversified farming grows. Portland Swift & Co plans a $3 million packing plant to process fat stock for eastern markets, signaling stronger regional efficiency and income for ranchers.

Kilauea Volcano Grows Nervous In Unprecedented Activity

The central pit of Kilauea crater exhibits explosive, pulsating lava activity not seen in 80 years of observation. Molten lava rises 10 to 400 feet within hours, then falls, repeatedly, over a 49 to 50 acre pit. A giant underground cavity may fill with gases, forcing lava upward until escape. The September 20 earthquake, once linked to Mauna Loa, is now attributed to Kilauea, creating fissures from the southeast to northeast through Puna.

Electric system to replace steam on New Haven line

An electrical engineer from the New Haven line discussed the shift to electric traction. He notes delays now are fewer than in steam operation and half unit locomotives or paired units with a single crew work well. Seventy five percent of traffic runs with half units. A pound of coal at the central station yields twice the drawbar pull of a steam locomotive, and electrification mainly boosts capacity by enabling rapid main-line and yard movements without extra track.
