Rear Admiral Asa Walker was placed on the retired list in Washington on November 14 after reaching the naval age limit of 62. Born in 1845 in Portsmouth New Hampshire, he entered Annapolis in 1862, graduated in 1866, taught at the Naval Academy four times, served under Admiral Dewey at Manila Bay, taught at the post graduate school in Newport Rhode Island, served on the general navy board in 1904, led the Charleston navy yard, and most recently was superintendent of the naval observatory.
