Additionally fires in New York destroy factories with extensive losses and several fatalities reported in multiple incidents.
Fletcher responds to inquiries about the Umatilla County coal mine near Hutter Creek twelve miles from Pendleton. He describes a tunnel of 126 feet with a three foot coal vein, notes a second vein found at 31 feet depth, and that a 40 foot shaft is being sunk to extract coal while winter work continues under manager WD Fuerence.
An elderly man, Henry J. Brooks, was struck by a train at the Farmington depot while making up cars for departure. He saved from worse injury by a brakeman but his right hand was crushed, potentially requiring amputation. he was taken to Walla Walla hospital for care. Brooks had been visiting the Willamette valley and lived near Cunek.
