Lake Swallows Mining Town in Spokane District
A former mining town in the Thunder Mountain district of central Waho, Prince, Spokane County, is now submerged under a lake created by a landslide two years earlier. The town’s few residents fled with belongings as the slide dammed a creek, flooding the area to about 600 yards by 200 yards with an average depth of 26 feet. A log schoolhouse and two cabins remain above water as silent relics. Roosevelt camp is deserted, mines closed, and prospectors moved on to tributary regions seeking new opportunities. The town is unlikely to be revived due to isolation, transportation challenges, and the cost of draining the water.
