Pendleton becomes the United States Army’s permanent recruiting headquarters for eastern Oregon. Col Charlee A. Varnum opened the 627 Main Street station near the Pastime theater after a trip through eastern Oregon to survey sites in Baker, La Grande and Pendleton. Recruits for eastern Oregon will be kept here until orders from Washington, with supplies first routed to Pendleton. Sergeant Beveridge, a cousin of Senator Beveridge, will lead the station, with Sergeants Kroyern and Robl in support.
