Cardiff May 22. Cabinet ministers face threats at public meetings from militant suffragists. Home Secretary Reginald McKenna skipped a Welsh conference amid fears of an attack planned to target him and delegates. organizers were unable to guarantee personal safety.
Special correspondence from Echo reports a foundation for a new concrete Main Street building sank, eased by an ancient cellar dug about thirty years ago when the site was a saloon bulldouse. The discovery links the partial collapse to forgotten cellar remains uncovered during the project.
Special correspondence from Echo Gre reports a broken derailing frog on the track near the wool scouring mills discovered by Fred Hosking and a local youth. The fault was spotted only moments before No. 17, the forward train, passed through, preventing a likely serious accident.

Secretary of the Navy Joseph Daniels rode eight miles in a flying boat with Lt. John H. Towers near Annapolis. The four minute to four o clock flight reached about 600 feet as Daniels praised the sensation after landing. Also nearby, Porto Rican site at the Panama exposition was dedicated by commissioner Db M Cuevas.

The largest class in school history will receive diplomas at 8 16 in the high school auditorium with Dr Joseph Schafer of the University of Oregon delivering the address. Olive Gwinn and Ethel Freeman will give the valedictory and salutatory, music by the Girls' Glee Club, and diplomas presented by Wilson Brock.

In Joplin Missouri on May 22 miner John Thrall shot and killed Fid Ward Skelton a Republican politician and ex city councilman inside a store. A mob of several hundred seized Thrall and pursued him to Carthage where he was held by six officers. The mob dispersed when a ruse revealed Thrall’s custody. Thrall faced charges over alleged attentions to Mrs Thrall who had divorced him years earlier.
In New York on May 22 four Italian highwaymen tried to rob James Wintreen a bank messenger carrying 9000 to a manufacturing company. A pursuit ensued with exchanges of gunfire between the highwaymen Wintreen and patrolmen. Wintreen was wounded in the arm. the robbers escaped.
Milton Bryant and Alves McKey were to perform an overhead flight from Pendleton to Athena Sunday as part of the annual celebration. The Caledonian association postponed their exhibition until the aeroplane is ready, and Bryant will visit the crowd in Athena while Arrant shifts plans. Bryant has installed an 86 bhp engine, replacing a 60 hp motor, with Miss McKey assisting in engine work and earning praise as both mechanic and aviatrix.
Secretary Booth of the National Wool Warehouse in Chicago arrived to attend the Pilot Rock sale and predicted a tight fight in Washington over wool tariff. Some experts expect partial abolition while others foresee free wool, with Wyoming growers having already shipped much of their clip earlier than Oregon.

Washington May 22 The nomination of State Senator Caminette of California to become commissioner general of Immigration, succeeding Dine O Keefe of Detroit, was sent to the senate today by President Wilson.
In Boston on May 22 the defense aimed to shift blame to Ernest Pittman, dead since a conference with district attorney Lets, as cross examination of Breen continued. Coakley pressed Breen on loan of 13000 from Atteaux to resolve damage suits from fake arrests, which Breen denied. Collins recalled denied Breen said he was treated unfairly and planned revenge. The defense signaled it would admit Pittman was involved but contend his death stemmed from financial losses rather than threats of prosecution.
A. C. Crawford, formerly of Her miston now based in Spokane, says Pendleton is in better business shape than any other town in the northwest. He notes his continued holdings in that section.
City officials rejected the lone bid on 200000 water bonds citing installment terms as objectionable. The water commission chair Will Moore confirmed the action after finance committee review.
