Athena prepares for a two day Caledonian picnic starting Friday with a full program of bagpipes, songs, dances, speeches, and athletic events. Pendleton and Walla Walla visitors expected as Umatilla County hosts its largest celebration yet.
The fate of the omnibus federal building bill with a $70,000 city appropriation remains uncertain and may fail this session. A Washington dispatch cites Treasury review and ongoing efforts to pass it alongside the currency bill, while a separate AP report notes Senate passage of the bill with amendments and higher totals including San Francisco sub treasury limits and embassy plans.
Portland May 21 Express messenger Edward Cummins was killed instantly and three other SP employes were badly injured when the second section of train No. 10 derailed near Pinole California at 9 40 p m caused by a broken rail. Fireman Gody and Engineer Ward were seriously hurt and may die, along with Express Messenger Birmingham and Baggageman Rodehover.
Port Townsend Washington May 21 the battleships Hiunels and Kearsaree dropped anchor as the Atlantic fleet passed. The arrival was greeted by a salute from the forts. The county Republican candidates opened their campaign with meetings in Umatilla Hermiston and Echo. The full slate left Portland this morning for Umatilla and will tour the county over the next 10 days with planned stops and brief addresses at each location.

In Jefferson City Missouri on May 21 enthusiastic delegates urged the national convention to nominate William J Bryan Nebraskan for president. The 32 district delegates were chosen by convention caucuses with unanimous approval. William Rothwell was reelected national committeeman as the convention backed deep waterways and approved a disfranchisement resolution for ignorant negroes. Governor Folk Senator Stone Jas A Reed and David St Francis were named delegates at large to the national convention.
Paris on May 21 reports Finance Minister Ceilleux says the 1909 budget shows a deficit of 5 million dollars with revenue about 785.8 million and expenditures around 794 million. To cover the shortfall the government will not issue short term bonds but will reform duties on stock and bond transfers and strictly enforce existing regulations to prevent evasion.
In Portland on May 21 Bishop Nichols of San Francisco was elected president of the eighth district missionary conference of the Episcopal church. Rev L C Sanford of San Francisco was named secretary and M B Coffman of Olympia Washington treasurer. No site for next year’s meeting is decided with Spokane and Boise as leading contenders.
Michael Campbell, who shot and killed John McClellan at Willme Landing, boarded to Cathlamet to surrender to Wahkiakum County authorities. He says he acted in self defense and traveled via Astoria to reach the county seat.

New York May 21 Mae Wood charged with perjury remains jailed as Judge O Gorman clears Senator Platt of bigamy. Affidavits show the marriage certificate was not printed until a year after the alleged ceremony. Witnesses say Mae Wood claimed no strong feelings for Platt and that letters allegedly harshly conflicting with romance were not love notes.

A mob of suffragettes gathered before Prime Minister Asquith’s offices in Downing Street. Police charged and dispersed the protesters before any speeches could begin. Six arrests were made as women sought a suffrage bill that Asquith refused to grant.
Edwin Gould stated Western Pacific will reach San Francisco and Los Angeles and invade the Pacific Northwest. He predicted the Pacific coast will see the greatest period of railroad activity in the coming years.
George Shepherd, late candidate for congress for the second district, will address the people at the courthouse Friday evening. County candidates will speak briefly, making it a political night in Pendleton. The principal address will be by Shepherd, touring eastern Oregon counties for the Republican ticket.
W H Steusloff of Salem is elected president of the state board of sheep commissioners at the annual meeting in Salem. Dan P Smythe is reelected secretary, with A L McIntosh added as a new member. The board adopts rules for foot rot inspection and quarantine of imported sheep, with inspectors to assist in Douglas county. Arlington sale to open season with 0.5 to 0.75 million pounds of wood to be sold Saturday. prices may be lower than last year.
Lee Price followed Dosser Green to Rader Furniture Store in Adams after accusations of Green being with Price’s wife. Price fired a 32 caliber revolver but cartridges misfired, Green fled to police and Price was arrested on disturbing the peace. Mrs Price rooms at Golden Rule hotel contemplating future. Green fled town. Dr Roller in Seattle accepts wrestling challenge with Frank Gotch for July.
County Superintendent Bryant leads an unprecedented eastern Oregon educational fete in Sherman county today and tomorrow. A daytime educational train will gather teachers and students along the southern Sherman boundary, with an evening Wasco finale featuring oratorical and declamatory contests, educator addresses, and music. President R C French of Weston Normal joins as judge for the final.
