Elementary Education Bill and Oregon Teachers' Pay Crisis
Four thousand six hundred Oregon children lack school facilities this year and the number may double or triple next year. One thousand three hundred one room teachers from 30 counties earn 18.73 a week for 32 weeks while 1,240 teachers in larger schools earn 20.44 a week for 33 to 34 weeks. Wages have risen little compared with living costs, with buying power dropping to about 30 cents per dollar since 1914.
