Time cards of all main line trains changed with railroad number changes. Train No 5 remains as a special exception. Many trains abolished or renumbered as Pendleton Portland locals are removed.
Eastbound No 6 Eastern Express arrives 2 20 am. Eastbound No 8 Chicago Special arrives 6 15 pm. Eastbound No 12 Atlantic Express arrives. Westbound No 6 Oregon Express arrives 11 05 pm. Westbound No 7 Portland Special from Chicago arrives 8 50 am. Pacific Express listed.
One of the most radical railroad timetable changes by O R N takes effect at midnight affecting arrivals and departures of all mainline trains except No 6. Local services shift to new numbers 7 and 8, with the Eastern Express renamed as No 8 Chicago special and Portland schedules updated. Station names and minor adjustments noted.
A masked robber halted the Fond Du Lac line street car in Milwaukee WI early today wounding the conductor and taking thirty five dollars before escaping. The incident occurred at the end of the Fond Du Lac line.
Patrick Calhoun distributes his Washington message denying Heney’s charges. He accuses Heney of false statements about fees and cites Heney’s appointment as district attorney in 1906 and alleged government compensation. The exchange references California constitutional eligibility for office.
Washington May 15. Portland Seattle and Spokane shippers will be heard by the Interstate Commerce Commission in June on enforcing the Spokane rate decision affecting the Harriman lines. The Spokane ruling for other roads takes effect June 1 with a temporary postponement granted. The conference could revolutionize freight rates across the Intermountain region.
Oregon captured 63 points to 35 for Idaho and 26 for Washington in a triangular meet at Eugene. Freshman Edwin Davis from Lincoln High School of Portland set a new university record with a 2:02.1 half mile, while Huston led Oregon with 12 points and Husk Montgomery of Idaho placed second in a tight 100 yard dash.
In Boylesville Indiana on May 15 an inquest investigates the deaths of Henry Williamson his wife and two children who were murdered before the killer died by suicide. The principal witness is Mary Boswell a neighbor's daughter who was asleep with the Williamson children when the tragedy occurred.
San Francisco report of A. J. Stevens of San Diego who surrendered his citizenship after meeting Julie Droulet, a half French, half native. engagement sprang in Tahiti but marriage blocked by six month residence rule for foreigners. Stevens seeks naturalization papers so they can wed in September before the Mariposa sails.
Orders received during the past week by railroad supply firms indicate confidence in a quick return to normal business. Millions of dollars worth of new cars are being sought. The Western Pacific and the Gould system each seek 1500 cars for the west, Santa Fe 500 furniture and auto cars, and Pacific Fruit Express 1500 refrigerator cars.
May 15 Olympia high school girls prepared a large satisfying square meal that won the state competition for the domestic science expedition. The commission approved four thousand dollars for a domestic science and manual training exhibit at the fair, with Olympia High School pupils as the principal exhibit.
Salem Ore May 15 Governor Benson issued a requisition to the Montana governor for the return to Wallowa county of Tom Tucker and Ben Tucker accused jointly with George Tucker of riot two years earlier.
Kansas City Mo May 15 The Missouri Stile express on the Chicago and Alton road bound south was wrecked a mile east of Odessa this morning. Thirty injured and four reported serious relief trains rushed to the scene to aid the injured.
J N Teal of Portland told the Washington State Conservation association in Walla Walla that Senate conservation committees throttle legislation aiding conservation and curb rights of the people. He denounced congressional reps as throttling progress and urged action to force duty toward the people they represent.
Willamette University in Salem announced by President Homan that the former Oregon Nursery plant building on campus will be converted into a major athletic stadium. The 65 yard square structure will house an eight-lap mile indoor track and serve as a large auditorium for public gatherings. It will connect with the existing gym and host numerous inter scholastic and inter collegiate events this winter. President Homan traveled from North Yakima to Pendleton and La Grande on the way to The Dalles, missing his western train by a half minute.
Oakland May 15 George Turner a bridegroom of a week dies after disregarding surgeon orders and moving on the operating table his left side pressed a jagged rib into his heart his death was instantaneous He had just secured a job as a teamster and on his first trip was crushed between his wagon and a hitching post and several ribs were broken.
Paris anxious over general federation action threatening a general strike in sympathy with striking postmen and telegraphers. Disturbances continue as 313 postmen are dismissed for taking part in the protest.
Will Walla, May 15. The path finder car is delayed here for repairs. It leaves at 4 o'clock this afternoon on the next leg for Seattle.
Rainier Washington May 1 Mrs Mary Elizabeth Kerrigan a well known local farmer hanged herself in a wood shed last night despondency given as the cause. Kerrigan was a leading figure in the vicinity and widely known to the farming community.
L L Jones, a member of the local colony of woolbuyers, left on the morning train for Shaniko.
Preparations are underway at the McM Nan ranch for the biggest Lion Hunt since the event given for Winston Churchill years ago. No one hinted yesterday that Roosevelt will start on his first extension drive Monday.
Manager J C McClellan of the local telephone company reports 25 new phones installed in the past two months and ongoing orders suggest growth will continue. To accommodate demand all party lines will be filled to capacity and numbers changed with a new directory to be issued mid next month. Long distance tolls are at record highs and more operators are needed as crews and equipment are promised to arrive soon.
Mrs. Martin Kavalshaug and Charles F. Newcombe are jailed in Tacoma charged with murdering Martin Kavalshaug as he alighted from a street car. The wife admitted planning the plot with Newcombe. the killing followed a dance where rivalries flared. Newcombe confessed in custody, saying the murder was devised by Mrs. Kavalshaug who sought freedom.
New York May 15 The public service commission has issued drastic rules to reduce trolley line accidents which killed 444 people and injured 25 000 last year They plan a 25 000 expenditure to prevent accidents and require all cars in the city to install fenders Wheel guards are also ordered Cars must submit drawings and specifications today and complete the work by August 1.
J D Matheson of the O BR N train master arrived on the noon La Grande train and, after business with his department, joined in light conversation about the road.
Washington May 15 Senator Gore Oklahoma blind statesman introduced a resolution urging the finance committee to investigate wholesale and retail prices of foreign made goods. He asserts current prices are unreasonable and that guilty parties should be held responsible. The measure was said to not grant new powers to the committee.
Washington May 15 Senators Hale Guggenheim and Scott said after a White House visit that Congress would not finish the tariff bill before August and that President Taft planned to go west after August 1.
In Washington on May 15 the census inquiry into North’s methods is under way by the Commerce and Labor Department officials. Early results are unfavorable to North, whose friends vow to press a congressional inquiry before the census bill clears Congress.
Weston Oregon May 14 The District School board announce a special meeting May 31 to vote on establishing a high school The action follows the State Normal board s refusal to permit use of state property at Weston for a private funded normal school The Eastern Oregon State Normal School will cease May 23 with commencement exercises after more than twenty years as a state institution The state board will be petitioned to use the state plant for public and high school purposes the district agrees to maintain the property, hoping for approval since the community donated the ground and one building to the state
May 15 Salinas California Percy Morse son of steel magnate C C Morse was rumored to be dead a day before the actual automobile accident that killed him. The vehicle overturned about 15 miles from Salinas after he spent the day in town and died later in a hospital.
Santa Rosa California May 15 Charles Cosaini a rancher is dead today from a peculiar accident Cassini fired a shotgun at a chicken and was found with the top of his head blown off in the yard It is believed he stumbled and the gun discharged accidentally
