In Berlin on May 12 Colonel Roosevelt addressed a large crowd on The World Movement. He compared past and present civilizations and urged balance among military prowess, business skill, science, and the virtues at the base of family life. He warned against neglecting homely values and called for organized effort and a high religious spirit to sustain civilization.
Duluth May 12 reports all settlements around Grand Marais burning or destroyed. Villages Tofte Lutsen and Rosebush wiped out Chippewa half destroyed. Standing and cut timber worth several million dollars scorched.
Kansas City May 12 The Hyde poisoning case closes amid bitterness between attorneys as Judge Latshaw cautions both sides. Assistant District Attorney Joost, in summarizing evidence, said the defendant with a murderous hand upon medicine prompting an objection from Walsh. The judge warned them to control their language.
Washington May 12 1919 Taft appoints Colonel Theodore Roosevelt as special ambassador to attend King Edward VII’s funeral in London May 20 marking the first direct Taft Roosevelt exchange since the inauguration. The cablegram notes Roosevelt to Berlin embassy and his acceptance in Washington.
Kobe Japan May 12 A typhoon swept an inland sea today and the loss of life is heavy One steamer carrying fifty passengers and a large crew foundered and all are lost Official reports indicate ships suffered heavily and many vessels were driven ashore or sunk amid the disaster with crews missing or drowned
Seattle on May 22 reports street cars back in service as the county faces delinquent taxes but celebrates a victory over the company. Attorney General Bell’s ruling overturned county interest claims, sparing the company fifty thousand dollars in interest.
New York May 11 The case of F Augustus Heinze former president of the Mercantile National Bank accused by the government of misappropriation of bank funds and over certification of Otto Heinze Co checks will go to the jury tomorrow evening.
In White Haven England May 12 a Wellington coal mine explosion trapped about 137 miners. Fire followed and rescuers could not enter for hours. officials fear a heavy death toll as gas hindered operations. The mine belongs to the Earl of Lonsdale.
Walla Walla May 12 Richard Quinn sentenced to death for the Everett wife murder will be hanged at the state penitentiary Friday the 18th and would be the 13th to die there if Governor Hay does not grant a second reprieve. Quinn’s April 16 hanging was postponed 28 days as efforts mount to commute the sentence to life. Scaffold construction work is finishing today.
Hartford Conn May 11 At the closing of the New England Arbitration and Peace congress in session here for four days resolutions were adopted praising past and present leaders in the peace movement Sympathetic reference was made to King Edward termed Edward the Peacemaker The day featured two major addresses by Simeon Be Baldwin former Connecticut chief justice and John W Foster former secretary of state
Seattle May 12 Joe Bonner manager of the Montreal saloon died from bullet wounds after a dawn duel. Wallace Brussel age 25 real estate man and relative of C B Brussel millionaire land owner is jailed. Patrolman Volt and a saloon porter fired. Brussels was shot while fleeing, refusing to talk.
Dayton Washington May 12 Among Bible students of the northwest there is perhaps no peer of six year old Madeline Garner of Dayton She is a granddaughter of W M Garner a Dayton pioneer contractor and has a 98 percent grade in an exam by the Interdenominational Bible School Society of Washington She was denied a diploma by Miss Lillian M Robinson Spokane state secretary because of her age which bars her from becoming an accredited member of the state league of teachers Rev Harris who lined up the teachers training class here for 36 weeks testifies the child is a marvel of tutelage in biblical subjects She has missed few sessions of the class All Bible classes in the state are receiving diplomas at this time.
Governor Benson Better is improved today and staying for health reasons at the Hotel Alexander in San Francisco. He arrived in the city and is receiving rest and medical attention as part of his recovery plan.
Hermiston reports show a large rainbow trout population in the big government reservoir but starving fish due to a soft mesh and insufficient food. Anglers push for a fish ladder at the Teed canal outlet to return trout to the river and improve future angling, with plans also for a ladder at the Furnish-Coe dam to aid fish passage.
Jessupburn, a $5,000 running colt owned by Rus Keen of Walla Walla, was badly injured yesterday when a bull dog owned by Ed Dooley attacked him as he and others were loaded for shipment to Salt Lake City. Veterinarians worked all afternoon to treat wide gashes, while trainer Jack Krause escaped serious harm by diving behind a bale of straw. The horse, along with David Bol and Freize, had been loaded in the car that morning.
Portland Oregon May 12 Kenneth the two year old son of Tracy Woods of 1056 East Thirteenth Street North is missing and believed kidnapped after vanishing from a go cart at a real estate auction gate at Kusa. A posse of friends police and relatives have searched since yesterday afternoon.
City council moves to close the unused Cottonwood street stretch between Water and the levee as a hitching and feed yard. Regular hitching racks will be provided at a new location. Raley Street between Walters mill and the city limits to be improved with a $200 appropriation. Franklin Street opened up at less cost than expected, with local donations supplementing the project.
Thirteen dead and one survivor from the Mississippi River disaster near Glen Rock as the steamer City of Saltillo struck a rock in darkness and high water, sinking in five minutes. Fifty-five aboard, including passengers and crew, faced a frantic escape. bodies recovered include Mrs Read and others, with some still missing. Rescue efforts by relatives and local workers followed, and the vessel, owned by St. Louis and Tennessee River Packet Co, had been built in 1892.
Three men robbed a Seattle street car early today on the Spokane avenue trestle, lining up passengers and taking about $1000 before escaping. The car then proceeded to Edmunds where the bandits are believed to have boarded a freight.
In Montesana Washington on May 12 the jury declared Gohl guilty of Hedberg murder. He remained unmoved as the clerk read the verdict and no appeal was filed by his attorneys before the jury was discharged.
