Fort Wayne Indiana May 4 ten are dead and about a dozen missing or fatally burned after the Aveline Hotel was destroyed by fire at 3 am. Chief Ankerbruck says about 20 bodies may remain in the ruins. Known dead include R. Johnson of Pana Illinois M. Hickson of New York J. B. Miller of Sheboygan Wisconsin J. B Ellis of Chicago W. A. Pitcher of Fort Wayne and G. W. Deving of Philadelphia. Three unidentified men and one unidentified woman were recovered. The brick hotel contained many occupants who fled flames by leaping to the street or from windows. The building collapsed floor by floor as the fire raged.

A. R. Strahan, Perth Coal Mining manager, reported a second gold discovery during sewer construction in Centralia. A shovel of gravel from the ditch behind his home yielded about 1.60 in gold from about 15 feet depth.
