Growth boom in Hermiston amid railroad link and services
Hermiston, six months old, hosts several hundred residents and rapid development including five brick buildings, a bank, two hotels, hardware stores, general stores, billiard halls, livery barns, a feed store, a newspaper, and four real estate offices. Located on the O R & N line, within seven miles of the Columbia River, lands rise about 460 feet above sea level with proximity to a railroad. The region plans orchards and alfalfa fields as the desert gives way to bloom. Also notes land entries from The Dalles and La Grande land offices, school land purchases affecting Morrow county tax rolls, and a push for grain sacks via local growers. O R & N recently stored 75,000 gallons of fuel oil in Heppner.
