California anti alien land bill passes senate in substitute

In Sacramento on May 3 the Webb substitute for the Birdsall anti alien land bill cleared the senate and seemed certain to pass the assembly. Vote 36 to 2. Governor Johnson to sign soon. The measure allows land leases by aliens ineligible to citizenship for three years, though critics fear renewal could be indefinite.

Suffragists Burn Railway Depot and Aberdeen School Fire

London reports a Midland Railway depot in Bradford destroyed by fire and valued at about a half million. Simultaneously the Ashley School wing in Aberdeen burned, with losses near $20,000. Suffragettes blamed for the fires while courts dismiss charges against Annie Kelley and Flora Drummond.

Thirty thousand women joined the largest suffrage parade in New York history on May 3. They were told to ignore men for a time, keep eyes forward and shoulders squared, and follow a line of twenty four horseback riders led by Inez Milholland.

Seattle May 3 The headless body of William Lehman a Talbot rancher was found on the Northern Pacific tracks near Renton. Police believe he fell asleep on the track and was struck by a train in what investigators term an accidental death.
