Rioting Across Cities Marks May Day Protests

May Day unrest spreads from Cleveland to New York and Boston. Fifty five rioters were arrested in Cleveland, one killed and over 100 injured including 17 officers. In New York City mounted police charged demonstrators near Madison Square Garden injuring convalescent servicemen. A bomb damaged a Brownsville office, injuring none but burying eight prisoners briefly. In Boston over 100 rioters were arraigned after a night of street clashes leaving four shot and many wounded.

Elks Initiate Eleven Neophytes in Local Lodge

Eleven candidates were initiated into Hikdem at the Elks Lodge in a regular meeting followed by a social feed. A building committee report on plans for a new home was presented with suggestions heard but no definite acceptance. A colored quartet provided music as entertainment. The initiates were J. K. American Soldiers Home In May And June Base Change

May 2 report says the American expeditionary force will be reduced to a smaller army along the front as hundreds of Americans are sent home during May and a larger portion ends after July. French ports will be abandoned and American railroads returned to France with Antwerp becoming the American supply base.

Mickelsen to Return to St Paul After Resignation

William Mickelsen, a teller at the American National Bank, submitted his resignation effective June 1. He will move with his two children to St Paul, Minnesota, where he plans to work in a banking firm and live. Mickelsen came to Premont eleven years ago and has served as deputy treasurer, also treasurer of the Church of the Redeemer's vestry. his relatives live in the Twin Cities.

Mystery bodies end missing Mia case in Columbia

The disappearance of Mia finding Laura Streed and two young girls cleared at The Dalles by discovery of three bodies in the Columbia River. The woman from Arlington vanished after leaving Heppner bound for Portland, with prior suicide attempts suspected. sheriff warned to pursue further lines of inquiry.

Rainfall in April Exceeds Last Year Despite Low Total

The April rainfall measured 87 inches, 4 inches below normal. April 1918 saw a smaller total rain in the month but higher yearly totals. Wet period began last September with 11.94 inches to date, above the eight month normal of 10.79. The warmest day in April occurred last Monday at 9 degrees. Father Butler from Herminton departed Pendleton after a visit.

Annual session of eight Baptist churches convenes in Umatilla

Delegates from eight Baptist churches including seven from Umatilla County and one from Ione Oregon gather in Pendleton for the 13th annual convention. The gathering opens at First Baptist Church at 2 pm with a devotional and songs, followed by sermons, reports, and discussions on evangelism and local church issues.

Local banks report near two thirds of Victory Loan goal

Nearly $18,000 in subscriptions were received by local banks today, raising the total toward about $290,000. Officials note several large pledges, including a $5,000 subscription and two four-figure gifts, with Pendleton's quota now largely pledged seven days remain. Treasury officials estimate about a third of the Victory loan subscribed nationally and unofficial returns show $1.5 billion loaned.

New Portland train set to run by May end

Trapshooters Arrive in Pendleton for State Meet

Low Rayburn of Portland leads a group of trapshooters arriving in Pendleton as the state shoot opens Sunday.
