The Weston Hotel Royal fire claims Eph Williams's life after he leaped from a first floor room with two tied sheets. Proprietor J N Klein reports about 9500 in losses, insured for half, and plans to reopen in the Marshall House annex while continuing to run the hotel business.

Royal Petroleum, a Dutch corporation capitalized at half a billion, plans to enter the local field and compete with Standard Oil in the United States after successful battles in Europe. It will open offices in San Francisco and New York.
Washington May 2 With only two days remaining of the present term It seems unlikely that the supreme court will announce decisions in the Standard CW and American Tobacco company cases If it goes over there will be no decisions until court convenes next October.
Pittsburg May 2. With seven to ten thousand already out, further walkouts are expected as Pennsylvania Railroad officials brace for a bitter clash with shopmen. Union leaders accuse management of systematically breaking organized labor by firing union men where convenient. General Manager Long denies the charges. Strikebreakers are being imported to the Pittsburgh shops.
Joe Vey, a notable stockman, is reclaiming 200 acres near the city by clearing heavy balm trees and brush with a traction engine. He has contracted the Monterastelli Brothers to build a levee along the Umatilla River bend to prevent winter overflow, costing several thousand dollars but viewed as a sound investment.
The supreme court heard a notable case as Miss Wayne Hackett, a stenographer to attorney Jay Bowerman, sought admission to practice law. Six other applicants faced rigorous exams, and several cases were argued or continued. A new rule restricts late-filed briefs, potentially affecting pending cases.

Rebels at Te corte and Federals gathering at Tia Juana signal mounting conflict as peace talks delay. Judge Carbajal’s envoy arrival is delayed, with no immediate negotiations anticipated. Rebel activity increases in Sonora and Coahuila as others fear ongoing war without prompt action.
Columbia Ohio May 2 The state senate passed by 15 to 16 a bill for direct election of United States senators after already passing the house. Observers think the bribery scandal influenced the vote leading to this measure.
Chicago May 1 A libel suit for $100,000 was filed against Secretary-Treasurer McVeagh by Charles Leach former Cleveland customs collector. Leach alleges McVeagh ousted him over an accusation that Leach allowed goods to pass from the customs house without payment.
In Los Angeles on May 2 the McNamaras defense and prosecution pressed toward a venue decision. Attorney Fredericks outlined the case as a great criminal matter with no labor or capitalistic bias guiding the defense. Leo Rappaport, joining the defense from Indianapolis, said the issue is criminal and that labor is not affected, predicting a not guilty verdict.
In a development in the Mabel Warner case, D W Ballex filed a motion to dismiss the appeal from Judge Bean’s decree in favor of Warner. Bailey argues improper descriptions in notices of appeal and lack of substitution for deceased Caroline Phillips. The court is expected to rule tomorrow.
Portland May 1 Chief of Police Cox tendered his resignation to the police commissioners today They refused it on the ground that Cox has not been proven guilty of the charge of malfeasance in office as the indictment charges Therefore the board has no grounds to act Cox says the charges are the result of politics and he is made to suffer for the actions of higher officials.
Milwaukee May 2 A two masted schooner thought to be a trader capsized off Whitefish Bay a half mile out in Lake Michigan. At least five crewmen are feared dead as life savers struggle against heavy seas. A large storm yesterday sent many lake craft adrift with late returns this morning.
Frederick Steiwer resigns as deputy district attorney after three years in office to devote time to private practice. W. C. E. Pruitt succeeds him, a well known county figure with legal and public service background, joining from the county clerk’s office and previously a newspaper man. Pruitt will temporarily office with Raley & Raley before opening his own.
Special correspondence from Hermiston Oregon May 2 describes a proposed bill in the U S House by A W Lafferty. The measure allows desert land holders in the Umatilla project who relinquish excess acres to assign entries in five acre tracts and later receive patents from the United States upon proof of reclamation and payment of charges. Assignees filing water rights would relieve the original holder from water payments while new assignees take on terms and conditions of the desert land acts. Continued on page five.
A large local crowd gathered at the Switeler ranch on the Washington side of the Columbia for the Redmen May Day picnic. Pendleton visitors included James Devlin kk D. Drake W. L. Thompson J. R. Raley and Charles Bond. Activities featured a ferry ride a Reumen lodge buckaroo program a big lunch with a giant kettle of beans and a dance by Showaway tribe with Pendleton musicians.

Severe storms in Illinois Indiana and Nebraska cause major damage and power outages as lightning winds and hail slam numerous towns. In Scranton Pennsylvania a fatal lightning strike kills a 15 year old girl and injures others while extensive wind damage damages homes and businesses. New York state endures a fierce electrical storm with widespread outages as Ithaca and Syracuse report property damage and casualties.
New York on May a riot erupted as police rushed to multiple east side points to quell clashes between union and non union Kosher bakers. Officials warn a bread famine could follow if the strike persists with an estimated daily shortage of 75,000 loaves.
San Francisco May 2. Delayed transmission from Christ New Zealand where filed April 1 reports Amundson meeting English expedition led by Scott in the far Antarctic. They met at Whale Bay in Ross Sea and are now believed to be pursuing the pole on separate routes.
Hong Kong reports British blue jackets and marines landed in Canton from four warships to quell potential Chinese rioting. No foreign casualties yet, but concern grows for missionaries in nearby provinces. In the harbor are four British and two French warships and two American and one German runboat.
Mhitage May 2 reports Mrs Ortie M'Manigat suffered a nervous collapse following news of her husband Ar ist's arrest in Los Angeles. The event prompted hospital care and local concern.
