Urgent call to aid M A work among soldiers in France prompts Rev J E Snyder pastor of the Presbyterian church to convene the church board for a decision. He has received a letter from the M C A headquarters in San Francisco urging immediate service in the educational branch. If he accepts he must depart at once for New York and then France within two weeks.
Ban Francisco reports the twelfth federal reserve district has authorized its minimum bond quota. Campilen Manager Weeks announced the district received 194,025,000 last night and more is en route, pushing the total slightly above 216 million.
Tokyo reports that Japanese press welcomes Baron Goto as foreign minister elect but notes he is not a professional diplomat. The appointment is seen as aligning with existing treaties and friendship with America, with a cautious shift anticipated on Iberian policy.
Captain Arthur Griswold of Hartford, Connecticut, led a stubborn defense under siege by Germans near Selphopres northwest of Toul. Shot, he refused surrender, fired his automatic, and charged the attackers twice more, leaving three Germans dead and another finished with the butt of a pistol. Griswold was known as a football standout in New Britain, Connecticut.
A Spanish statesman returning from Germany told Interchange Telexraph company that Allied victory hinges on holding the line. He served in front line trenches and was sent from France to Fort Porter New York then Pendleton. He is 24 born in Kansas, a farmer, and is in a confused nervous state with no evident injuries. Hospital officials will contact his parents.
A young Pendleton man, Divighe Chyde Belis, died after a tonsil removal operation yesterday. He awakened from anesthesia and appeared normal before suddenly passing away, with heart failure cited as the cause. He was 20 years old, born August 30, on Bear Creek, and had lived most of his life in the city. He is survived by his mother, Mrs Helen Belle, two sisters, and two brothers, with funeral set for tomorrow at 2:20 PM at the Methodist church.
London May 1 General Haig reports only local fighting near Locre with heavy machine gun fire and heavy enemy trench activity. Casualties and broader German pressure remain unclear as officials caution on details while presses await clearer reports from the front.

Washington March 1 Secretary Baker will present a government army expansion plan to Congress. Evidence of the war department’s ability to officer equip and mobilize three million men is to be examined by the house committee. General Crowder will accompany Baker to show draft reserve status and mobilization progress. The War Department war council met with Hurley March and others to discuss shipping and materiel.
