Federals Driven Back In Last Torreon Stronghold Fight

Rebels under Villa pressed the defense of Gomez Palacio for 40 hours ending at 5 am, routing federals and forcing a retreat toward Torreon. Villa rode all night to interpose between forces, while Hermosillo supplied by rail. Officials estimate about 1500 Federals killed or captured. Villa did not reveal his losses.

Washington March 24 The Supreme Court adjourned until April 6 without handing down any decisions in the pending important rail road cases.

Japanese cabinet resigns amid naval graft scandal

Tokyo March 24 The cabinet headed by County Yamaodto resigned after a naval graft scandal. The mikado accepted the resignations and has not yet decided who will form the new ministry.

High School Students Aid City Fly Campaign

High school students under Prof. Thath will canvass Pendleton to locate fly breeding sites. Findings go to the Commercial Association committee guiding the city wide effort. The barn door fly trap, designed by Dr. Hodge and Prof. Chloupek, will be sold at cost to residents, about 65 to 70 cents, to trap flies within 100 yards.

Women invited to reception by Smith For Governor Club

Judge Cleeton Rules Tax Penalties Uncollectible

Portland Ore March 24 Cir cuit Judge Cleeton held that penalties of one per cent a month on taxes unpaid before April first are invalid He granted a restraining order against Tax collector Lewis enjoining collection The taxes do not become delinquent until September 1 and penalties only on delinquent taxes The decision may spark state turmoil and an appeal is possible The county commissioners scheduled a Friday meeting to decide future action inviting all elective county officers including the governor and state tax commission due to statewide impact

Militia Called as Lancaster Strike Flares Near Plant

Bruffalo March 24 With two militia regiments at armories for strike duty quiet reigned after riots left one dead and many injured in clashes between strikers and guards. A work train was sent to the Gould Coupler plant guarded by the seventy fourth regiment. less than 200 strike breakers worked. Nightly shots wounded both sides. The sixty fifth regiment joined, streetcars halted as militiamen were carried to depots. Carsmen feud with the militia. a hostile carmen demonstration occurred outside the seventy fourth regiment armory. Guards protected shops and saloons to keep order.
