Reports from eastern Oregon warn of a severe storm with heavy livestock losses feared. Lambing camps report retarded feed and milk shortages for young lambs, while sheepmen in Arlington Juniper and nearby areas brace for further damage as snow and cold continue.
March 24 reports from Des Moines Terre Haute Omaha Jacksonville and Lincoln describe cyclones causing multiple deaths injuries and widespread ruin. Flak Springs Mo Perth Prairietown Berlin Neb and Bonifay Fla are cited among affected areas with dozens dead and hundreds injured or displaced.
Omaha reports up to two hundred dead and ten million dollars in damage after a devastating tornado. City officials, including Mayor Dahlman, announce rising casualties as rescue efforts continue, with thousands homeless and responders from across the region converging for relief.
Senator J N Burgess, manager, stated the Cunningham Sheep and Land Company handles several thousand new lambs with no losses so far. The sheep are under cover and thriving, though stormy weather threatens potential harm if it persists. One Matthews band graze in hills where stew is over a foot deep, not a lambing band.
Churches across the city held Easter services despite unseasonable weather. Cold weather hampered gun club members as they opened the state tournament yesterday. PB Pendleton’s score awaits official tally from Eugene secretary. Al DeSpain led local shooters with 8 of 25 birds. Darl Phelps and Dr. Sharp hit about 80 percent, Hamley 72, others ranged from 25 to 68 percent with many mid 60s. Next shoot scheduled for Sunday with Portland competing.
The Pendleton term of the federal district court scheduled to open Tuesday has been postponed for several weeks due to the absence of Judge Bean. Marshal Scott will call court to order Tuesday and immediately adjourn.
Dr. H. E. Curry of Baker Oregon was arraigned in federal district court on four counts of using the mails for unlawful purposes. His counsel asked for dismissal and Curry was given several days to perfect a brief.
New York report says Julian Hawthorne son of a famous author and Dr William J Morton are sent to Avanta Ga federal prison after conviction for using the mails to defraud in mining stock promotions each given one year and one day in jail.
C. J. Harrison of Chehalis Washington says he may come to Pendleton to construct and sell a large number of small houses and bungalows. He plans dwellings costing about 1500 dollars, available cash or installment. Harrison notes Pendleton lacks satisfactory small homes and will revisit in about two weeks with better weather.
