A busy morning at Pendleton draws reports from the recorder’s court on drunkenness and minor fines. The Matlock Dorrick bid is awarded as the O R & N Co builds a new Main street sidewalk with local workers.
An 1888 East Oregonian letter from La F Kenan urges Alba democracy to renominate E B Gumbee for the Oregon legislature. The writer praises Gumbee as a practical farmer, diligent worker, and capable future lawmaker with honest business methods. He notes Gumbee’s family ties and views the nomination as just and necessary.
In Alba Oregon on March 17 the Democratic primary elected La F. Knight as chair and L. Brooks as secretary. Delegates were named to the county convention and supported J. M. Bentley for Sheriff and G. A. Hartman for County Clerk with La F. Knight and L. Dewaul as nominees for local offices. The meeting minutes were ordered sent to the East Oregonian.
A biographical sketch profiles circuit judge George W. Walker born in Tennessee, his family background, arrival in Oregon in 1860, early work as a teacher and carpenter, law study in Albany, admission to the Oregon Supreme Court bar in 1870 and federal bar in 1882, and his judgeship appointed in 1887. It notes his court record, re election talk, and his marriage to Lelah White in 1884. The piece also mentions political topics about tariff legislation, Oregon war claims, and railroad proposals affecting Pendleton and the region.
The Malheur County Democratic convention met at Yale on Thursday March 15 and nominated candidates for various county offices including relative, sheriff, clerk, treasurer, county judge, and commissioners. Delegates to the state convention were chosen, and the gathering closed with harmony and confidence in a June victory.
