Civic club sponsors a gardening contest for third to eighth graders with four categories. Seeds provided by school board and donors. Gardens due by March 31, stories due May 20, each under 200 words on legal cap paper. Prizes range up to $1 per category with special prizes.
Washington march 13 the home foreign affairs committee met in secret session to discuss the resolution calling upon the president for all available information regarding the Mexican situation. The committee is expected to make a favorable report on the resolution.
In Chicago on March 18 criminals struck as street lights failed in the business district. A hotel clerk at Hotel Briggs lost 160 dollars, Thompson's restaurant cashier 35 dollars, and D. K. Boylan was knocked unconscious with 200 dollars taken. Dozens of similar robberies followed in the darkened area.
Salem March 18 James D Slater of La Grande Democrat filed his declaration as a candidate for district judge in Oregon's tenth district.
Miss Eleanor Wilson and Secretary of Treasury McAdoo are said to be engaged with reports circulating in Washington. The Wilson family reportedly defies superstition about Friday the 13th as a public announcement is anticipated. McAdoo, fifty, is described as youthful by friends and enjoys tennis with Miss Wilson who is athletic and fond of outdoor life.
Prineville will host the 1916 convention of the Cattle and Horse Rangers Association of Oregon and the stock men’s annual meeting on the second Tuesday of February, not March. Officers were elected and the group discussed expanding to a regional scope including Idaho, Washington and Montana to improve market information and coordination for members.
F T Bowles, head of Fore River Shipbuilding, admitted paying Clarence De Knight $1000 as a retainer with a $4000 contingent fee if the provision barring railroad owned ships from using the canal was defeated. Bowles read De Knight’s letters promising aid and detailing tactics to block the clause with Knowland of California.
New York Herald quotes an unnamed Washington officer that Roosevelt will not lead the progressive national ticket in 1916 and that Goethals is the favored candidate. The report places Goethals as a leading choice for the Progressives though no official nomination is stated.
St LouisMarch 17 The body of W A Hunicka was recovered from the ruins of the Missouri Athletic club today raising the total bodies found to ten. Seven are identified and others remain unnamed.
Salem March 16 George M Brown of Roseburg district attorney for Douglas county filed a declaration of candidacy for the republican nomination for attorney general.
Three bodies are recovered from beneath walls of the St Louis Athletic club with more believed buried in the wreckage. The story notes widespread devastation and ongoing search efforts.
Six missing others feared buried as rescuers face danger from collapsing walls near the Athletic club ruin. A unidentified Black man is credited with rescuing four people yesterday after noon, diving into debris to save one man and three women, then vanishing. He may be nominated for a Carnegie hero medal.
Representing Hans Schmidt, Attorney Mc Manus filed a notice of appeal to the New York circuit court of appeals. The action automatically acts as a stay of execution. It is not believed the court will reach the case for months. Schmidt's execution was set for next week.
A vein of coal is reported near Oakland with F W Johnstone filing location notices. Johnstone claims the vein runs 7500 feet long and 12000 feet wide and is easily workable, with immediate development planned.
Pendleton audiences heard Byron's Troubadours present a superb show at the high school auditorium. Seven acclaimed artists performed on multiple instruments with a full ensemble including pianist violinist celloist cornetist trombonist and harpist plus a saxophone quartet. Baritone and tenor solos drew the strongest applause, and the entire program proved music transcends color lines.
In Sacramento on March 18, the unemployed army in Yolo County dissolved as remaining members, led by General Kelly's faction, drifted away in small groups despite jail appeals to remain loyal and follow orders.

Salem Oregon March 15 Governor West after a border tour says he cannot see any settled conditions in Mexico and that the United States, in upholding the Monroe Doctrine, will likely send an army into Mexico to restore peace in the not distant future He plans to urge Oregon National Guard officers to prepare for war and believes administration is right to keep out now. The governor spent two days on the Mexican border.
El Paso reports indicate Villa may be under heavy attack at Escalon with no confirmed news. Juarez rebels deny a battle but indicate engagement ongoing as federals push toward Jiminez through the Rio Florida valley. Rumors say General Benavides may be dead and Jiminez captured, though unconfirmed. Mutineers Executed in Mexico City as federals execute 140 mutineers at Jojutla barracks. bodies dumped in a trench.
Local baseball committee queries business leaders and fans after manager Bade of Walla Walla and directors visit. Dissatisfaction with Pendleton’s late surrender in the Western Tri-State league prompts a fresh survey to decide if a team will stay in the league. A formal decision is expected tomorrow.
County Judge J. W. Maloney says oiling the macadam between Pen deton and Adams is likely this spring. G W Gross of Athena and Parl T Hales of Adams urged the project as oiling would protect the road from wind and wear and extend its life. Oil could be bought cheaply though freight costs are a concern. a special rate may be sought. The Baker Packing Co. installs a $4000 automatic refrigerating plant.
The state railroad commission ordered a physical connection between lines of Home Independent Telephone and Eastern Oregon Co operative Telephone at Elgin Summerville and Coe. The order follows a Home company complaint and hinges on Home withdrawing from the local exchange business at Elgin Cove and Summerville. Both companies have 20 days to net all connections.
