London and Washington buzzed with unconfirmed reports that King George of Greece was assassinated in Athens and Saloniki. The Greek legation denied confirmation while Reuters claimed a Saloniki death, with capitals Paris and Berlin awaiting official word and Athens as the source of final details.
Cincinnati March 18 George Cox and ten other citizens face two indictments charging misapplication of funds at the Cincinnati Trust Company of which Cox is president The bank closed its doors in November 1911 The grand jury returned the indictments yesterday The men indicted with Cox were former officers and directors If convicted each faces a 15000 fine and thirty years in prison

Washington, March 18. A White House letter dated January 20 to Senator Tillman indicates President Wilson will adopt a budget scheme for government operations. He stresses the need for a carefully considered budget and plans to confer with lawmakers to implement the budget system.
Chairman Clark of the Interstate Commerce Commission vows to compel data on the value of common carriers. He says the valuation work is vast but the commission will proceed to secure reliable information to determine original cost and productive value of properties under public franchises. He notes no one knows the true value of a carrier.
Stevenson Wash March 18 The monthly meeting of the Skamania Elks club was held with the acting ruler Shiherds at Shipherd s Springs Hotel with full attendance. Four Cascade Locks residents crossed the river in a steam launch secured for the occasion. The club plans many jolly gatherings in the open this summer.
In Bingham, Mass, March 18, officials announced arsenic in the stomach after the body of Read Admiral Joseph Giles Eaton was found. The inquest at the courthouse will hear testimony from his widow regarding whether the death was suicide or murder.
London March 1 A strike by Hotel Cecil employees succeeded as management conceded their demands during an Irish banquet attended by 700 patriotic Irishmen. John E Redmond declared opposition to home rule in Great Britain was dead while praising patience for the bill’s passage. A cablegram from the United Irish League of America pledged $1000 more to the cause.
Springfield March 18. Secretary of State Bryan and Governor Dunne arrive as the legislature meets. Bryan, speaking as an individual and not a government official, urges lawmakers to adhere to party pledges in electing two U S senators. He praises Dunne’s administration while the deadlock persists with 85 votes for J Hamilton Lewis in today’s balloting.
Concord N H March 18 Gordon Woodbury a Senate candidate accused a legislator of offering to sell his vote and deliver four votes for 1000 in the pro Hollis anti Hollis contest. Two other witnesses said they were approached. A representative testified of a bribe offer and large cash roll on a railroad train.
San Quentin March 18 Reverend William J Call Chaplain of the prison admits holding fifteen hundred dollars graft money given by prisoners. He says the funds were solicited under promise of influencing pardons or paroles. Call was discharged after confessing his inability to support seven children on a hundred dollar monthly salary.
Sacramento reports generous rainfall ending a long drought since 1299. Northern California sees heavy rains and snows in valley and mountain districts. The precipitation is a godsend to farmers and cattle raisers across the region.
Washington reports that under President Wilson the government will not act as collector for South and Central American debt nor guarantee Wall Street loans to foreign powers. The cabinet discussed Morgan Kuhn Loeb financing for a six power loan to China and considered recognizing the new Chinese republic. Bryan offered no endorsement to emissaries seeking approval.
The Western Tri-State baseball season will start April 22 with games in Walla Walla Bolas and North Yakima. Pendleton likely opens with Walla Walla. Six clubs are represented by official delegates including Walla Walla four, plus Boise and Pendleton. Two umpires, Burnside of Portland and Mead of Stockton, have been secured. The schedule, largely done to July, will be finalized after further refinements.

Walla Walla Washington March 18 One man Gale has been taken to the pest house after returning from Pasco Toppenish and Spokane exposing West Main street residents to smallpox County Health Officer Dr M Stiles ordered lodging house precautions and public warnings He investigated Sunday morning and began isolating contacts while urging extreme caution in the near future
Pendleton will close all stores pools saloons and public business from noon to 5 pm on Good Friday making it the only western city to officially observe the day. The move began with J F Robinson and was endorsed by Commercial Association president Tallman and a supporting committee. European and eastern cities practice the custom. local Episcopal and Catholic churches will hold special services.
