Canada mills poised for boom as tariff changes loom in Canada and United States. Manufacturers praise Payne tariff bill as honest, while Charles Schwab warns of iron price cuts and pauper labor. British Columbia lumber makers expect relief from duties, predict export growth and lower costs as syndicates gain control of mountain mills.
In Washington on March 18 President Selaya of Nicaragua was told by Secretary Knox to disband the Nicaraguan army immediately and retile the Emory claims without delay. The instruction followed a conference with Central American representatives and the Mexican minister, and Knox stated the new administration will not tolerate further disturbances in Central America.
Washington discussions show leading manufacturers warn that allowing Canadian lumber with a one dollar duty per thousand feet would drive many small US mills out of business and harm conservation aims. They say lower grades would lack markets if Canadian mills enter, as they undersell due to cheaper stumpage labor and transport. Paris Telegraph Strike Spreads. Dan P. Smythe, secretary of the state woolgrowers association, says the proposed tariff on wool is acceptable. First and second grade tariffs would stay. third class or carpet wools would be cut about one cent, though no carpet wools are grown locally. Officials risk fraud by admitting first or second class wool as third class to dodge duties. Current rates: merino 11 cents per pound, coarse wool 12 cents. Third class set at four cents. higher value wool above 12 cents would have a different rate.
Portland March 18. The proposed reduction of the duty on lumber will have a disastrous effect upon the Oregon lumber industry.
The first shipment of exhibits to the A P Seattle exposition arrived in consignment filling nine cars. Part of the display for the Canadian government, it was shown at the Franco British exhibition in London last year and highlights Canada’s resources.
The O R N grain rate hearing between eastern Oregon points and Portland was postponed from yesterday to April 26 after the head official was recalled to the state. The case, the final in a series started last fall, targets wheat freight rates and will affect all main and branch lines from Huntington to The Dalles. A separate hearing on railroad property valuations for O R N and Southern Pacific will occur at 1 40 p m on April 2 in the Wells Fargo building, Portland.

A U S circuit court judge issued a foreclosure decree this afternoon against the Metropolitan Street Railway properties in a suit brought by the Guarantee and Trust Company. The decree orders payment of 13,589.27 to the court within twenty days, with six percent interest, and, if unpaid, directs Special Master Turner to sell the property on June 1.
Canyon City Oregon March 18 William George a sheep herder for Fletcher Bros Mount Vernon sheepmen was shot yesterday afternoon by A A Dean who lives on a small farm on the south fork of the John Day river George had previously herded on Deans land and allegedly abused Deans wife When the sheep were reentering Deans land trouble occurred and George was wounded in the face The district attorney is investigating the incident.
Glenna Ferry Idaho reports Roy Williams shot and killed Joseph Pallister near here yesterday. Williams surrendered to officers saying trouble arose over a water hole on the range. The long standing range fight between sheep and horsemen is seen as the real cause.

Indian revival meetings under Presbyterian auspices will be held at the Tutullla mission for one week starting Wednesday May 5. The Stites meeting begins a series across northwest reservations with Warm Springs to follow.
