Colonist travel drops off to Spokane amid waning colonist tickets

Reports from the Spokesman-Review show northwest travel on colonist tickets falling to the lowest level since trains began. About 175 colonists reached Spokane yesterday on Great Northern and Northern Pacific routes, with fewer than 66 staying. The Northern Pacific express carried roughly 60 colonists, under 20 ending their journey in Spokane. J H Rothbert of Eau Claire says many travelers seek work in the mills, noting mills shut down due to lumber freight-rate hikes and expectations of a spring restart in the northwest.
