Paris dispatch reports Europe waiting for President Wilson to decide on the disposition of the German fleet. France and Italy seek portions of ships while naval officials favor sinking as a disarmament move. Civilians oppose sinking citing economic and strategic concerns.
At a Pendleton stockholders meeting of the Farmers Union it was voted to hold local county meetings next week to discuss loan elevators and organization. Schedule includes Athena Pilot Rock Pendleton Myrick Fulton and North with named committeemen leading each session. Other business was routine.
American cavalrymen monitor Villistas across the border near Hachita New Mexico after Villintay captured Buck Spencer a ranch foreman. Ranch superintendent Moorhead ready to pay 5000 for release. Ten Mexican workers held. Spencer previously freed on ransom. Patrol also prevents ammunition smuggling near the border. Also Richmond VA predicts Wilson 1920 reelection per Norman Mack New York Democratic committeeman.
Pendleton firms sold 28 pleasure cars two trucks and two tractors at the automobile show and expect totals to reach 25 more by show end. Dealers report phenomenal public interest with every make drawing attention. Out of town reps from Goodyear Chevrolet Oldsmobile and others are on site at Happy Canyon pavilion. Tonight’s program promises novelty with high jinks and an auto show dance planned for Monday night. A fire at the Beard property on Perbia Avenue was controlled by the fire department this afternoon.
The dispatch reports disturbances between Korean nationalists and authorities settling. Two rioters are killed in Koka Province and several security forces injured. Elsewhere, unrest is quelled as authorities move to maintain order amid a nationalist declaration of independence from Japan.
On March 15 the Department of Labor ordered parole for 12 of 31 aliens after LW W attorneys asked for reopenings. Deportation orders in 19 cases were reaffirmed. Many Pacific coast arrivals to New York had cases dropped or withdrawn. A marriage license was issued to Merton A. Heldenrich and Vera Flock.
A four day grain grading school will be held next week in Pendleton at the county library. The program from March 17 to 20 includes lectures by G R Wyellop of Oregon Agricultural College on federal grain grades and supervision, B J Stubblefield traveling supervisor for markets, LU D Av of Portland on work of the binte inspection department, and J W Church chief in charge of the program.
Eleven members of the 116th Engineers with overseas service marks visit Pendleton from Fort Logan. The group includes Jack W. Lukens and Stephen Harrie among others, with familiar Pendleton servicemen Bud Cornfield Fred Gebel and Moscow Froom. Froom plans to bring a French wife home on return. The party will tour the auto show and depart on the Walla Walla train tonight.
Washington, March 15. The War Department announced base hospital No. 46 will be deployed early. The unit is mostly composed of Oregon doctors, nurses and men.
Salem March 15 The highway commission will receive bids March 26 for paving the Wild Horse road to point two miles onset of Athens a distance of nine miles.
In Chicago on March 15 a tax payer handed a check for five million to an Internal Revenue Collector as the first payment on his income tax. The payer refuses to reveal his identity.
Paris reports that French editor Aurice de Valer notes Americans with exaggerated nationalism attack President Wilson. The piece says Wilson’s league of nations idea shifts from utopian to practical, and French sentiment now defends him as his principles gain support.
The Oregonian explains an unavoidable delay due to web press repairs and hopes to have operations restored by this morning. The brief notice emphasizes the temporary disruption and intent to resume normal publication promptly.
Pagus March 15. Germany has agreed to all conditions the allies imposed on food shipments. Exports will be confined to raw materials like coal, potash and dye materials. No commercial advantage over French or Belgians. German ships used as payment for food with remaining costs to be paid in cash.
Pendleton's speed cop again demonstrates sleuthing skill by arresting Edward A. Porter A Gamey and Guy Struthers for driving about 30 miles per hour. Each pays a $10 fine to Judge Fite Gerald. Porter had been present at a similar party last Wednesday when arrested for fast driving.
Watertown New York plant resumes operations after a one week shutdown to avert a machinists strike. Union officials estimate 175 to 250 of about 1500 machinists returned, while company officials say 400 returned. A large crowd of union men and supporters gathered, but no trouble occurred.
Four men died when a Redondo Beach electric train hit an automobile carrying five Los Angeles shipbuilding company employees bound for work. One more may succumb, and the wreck prompts scrutiny of the men and their service histories.
President Wilson is expected to press for including the league of nations in the preliminary peace treaty with Germany. He favors adoption of the present league constitution as a foundation with minimal amendments. A supreme war council session was set to discuss military terms ahead of the complete pact next week.
Washington reports Senator Kenyon favors amending the League of Nations before Senate ratification. He spent a week in Iowa consulting constituents and declined to sign the opposition Round Robin. Iowa opposition sees his stance as aligning with critics and demands clearer language in the pact.
March 15 The Prussian reichstag held its first meeting since the republic was established with all attendees searched for weapons. An official notice named the German peace delegation led by Foreign Minister Brockdorff Rantzau with Dr Edward David, Foreign Minister Glesbert, Adolf Mueller, Max Warburg, and Professor Schuecking as members.
Washington reports an emergency committee of the council of national defense formed to aid unemployed sal ers and sallora as unemployment rises. The group seeks swift action from governors mayors and state councils of defense to open state and municipal employment offices to replace federal offices closing March 23, with appeals telegraphed nationwide.
