Explosion at Corbett Walldims injures many in Portland

In Portland a blast from an unknown source at the Corbett Walldims basement probably fatally sealed engineers George Udy Claude Boffman and James Asher this afternoon. A large section of the basement wrecked and a fire followed causing light damage. Asher later died from his injuries.

Soldiers Pass Through Pendleton After Demobilization Move

Seventy Oregon and Washington soldiers from the Sunset Division and the All American army traveled by No. 10 train at 4 16 am toward Camp Lewin for demobilization. Lieutenant James Clark Irwin Jr and Captain McClare oversaw wounded men while the Red Cross canteen provided breakfast. Two ex-Pendleton residents, W. F Grunow and Walter Bacon, were among the travelers.

Pupils at Washington Lincoln and Hawthorne and Pendleton high school drills ran out quickly under Fire Chief Ringold this morning. Average times ranged from 20 to 45 seconds with Field school practicing notably rapid exit of 20 seconds for zero enrollment.

Protest Against Gas Storage Tank Plans Near City

A council protest against Pacific Power and Light Co plans for a 20 foot gas storage tank in the west end of the city was presented. Residents fear fire risk and property devaluation. Captain Best and Others Return from War Leave

Captain J. A. Best is due in Pendleton tonight on No. 14, arriving home on leave with discharge not yet received. Captain Bowt, a former Huivor, served in five medical corps and was stationed at San Proeisen before returning from Brest, France. He recalls Brest’s tough conditions in October and November with many doctors and soldiers needing care as influenza and pneumonia struck.
