A Colón based special report claims a long dormant volcano underlies the Culebra Cut and menaces the canal. Steam clouds from freshly turned earth trigger tests before blasting while canal geologists attribute the steam to oxidation despite increased rock temperatures and blue smoke.
Rome reports a heavy engagement at Benghaal Tripoli with Italian forces defeating Turkish and Arab troops. Official war office tally places Italian deaths at 29 and 62 wounded, while the Italians say they captured two Turkish portions after fierce fighting. The Turks reportedly charged multiple times.
Constantinople March 1. The Turkish government released a message from Hdhem Pasha, commander in Tripoli, disputing Rome reports. Pasha states Turks decisively defeated the Italians with heavy Turkish losses, while claiming the Italians suffered over 42,000 killed.
Tomorrow evening marks Pilot Rock’s formal hotel opening and first banquet of the town’s young commercial club. Invitations have gone to Pendleton and county residents plus other guests. Program highlights include Our City’s Welcome, Our Social Needs, Rural Development, Stock Farming, music numbers and impromptu speeches with Douglas Betts and Dr. Fred A. Lidallen serving as toastmaster.
Two Penibeton youths James and John Bryson will join Waldwin’s Seattle to Alaska boundary expedition. They sail for the Ice fields between Skolao pass and Mt Ellas with twenty horses to study glaciers and ice as they head toward regions never trodden by man. Frank Flores of Pendeton plans to join a second Alaska party in a month. All have two prior summers in similar work.
Under Captain Johnson plans form to salvage part of the wreck of the Beamer Rosevaruns near Gaviota California on March 13. Two crew members perjected.
Washington March 13. Four hundred women led by the official board of the National Woman Suffrage Association invaded the chamber and addressed the House Judiciary Committee. Chairman Clayton presided as speakers Reverend Annie Shaw and Mrs Kent, wife of Congressman Kent, argued for women's suffrage.
More than fifty boys aged 15 to 19 from Pendleton county communities expected to attend the Men and Religion Forward Movement convention Friday through Sunday. Delegations from Echo Stanfield Athena Adams Weston Pilot Rock Hermiston Uma tilla and Walla Walla area confirmed or hoped for. banquet to be held at the armory with speeches by local educators and visiting leaders.
Portland March 13 Dr Harry Lane reconsiders refusal to seek the democratic nomination for United States senator after Democratic leaders press him to run and vow to place his name on the primary ballot. Lane says the change does not affect other candidates and plans a declaration of principles to circulate in counties before March 24. If nominated he will campaign across Oregon and state his positions clearly.
Washington reports a conference among President Taft Senate foreign relations committee Secretary of War Stimson and Attorney General Wickersham and a Texas delegation over neutral shipments of arms to a friendly country amid rebellion. Talks reference Juarez and a plot by Mexico’s wealth to restore the Diaz regime.
Senator La Follette and his wife depart Washington for North Dakota to enter the presidential primary race. He left against his doctor’s advice, says he has nearly recovered, and accuses Colon Roosevelt of breaking faith with him.
Washington March 12. Maplon Pitney of New Jersey was confirmed by the senate today as associate justice of the United States Supreme Court despite protests from labor bodies nationwide. Pitney was accused of having a capitalistic mind as Taft announced the nomination.
FE Burt, the rapid sketch artist whose window work at the Peoples Warehouse last year drew much attention, has returned from La Grande.
The largest tax payment in Umatilla County history, $171,714.22, was deposited with Sheriff T. D. Taylor by the O. W. R. & N. Company. The payment reflects a discount for prompt payment, leaving the assessed levy for the county at about $14,000 on the company’s main and branch lines. The note argues the county bears a greater share of company property, highlighting perceived injustice if revenue is diverted to the state treasury.
In Sanderson, Texas this morning two bandits boarded a west bound Southern Pacific train and forced the stop. Samuel Trousdell, the express passenger, struck one robber with a wood mallet killing him and then killed the other after seizing the dead man’s weapon. The train resumed to Sanderson with the bandits’ bodies. valuable registered mail and $10,000 in the express car were at stake.
City physician Dr Temple and Chief of Police John Kearney issued spring clean-up and sanitary precautions for the city. Restaurants butcher shops and grocery stores must remove open swill barrels and confine slops in covered containers. One restaurant owner resisted due to expense but health officials aim to extend the program citywide. Household and business properties urged to hire garbage collection and remove debris promptly. The slogan urges timely cleaning and ongoing effort to prevent flies and odors.
Twenty one injured as New York Central Twentieth Century Limited derailed near Hyde Park, five cars plunged into the Hudson River and went three quarters submerged. Survivors used torn clothing as bandages while physicians aided the injured. Several passengers escaped through windows as steel cars prevented greater fatalities. Victims, many in nightwear, were rescued and reached New York City with losses of personal effects.

Umatilla County Democrats schedule a mass meeting for March 20 inviting every registered voter in the county. Prominent state Democrats from Oregon are expected, with four candidates in the senate race including Harry Lane, Walter Pierce, Coshow, and Milt Miller. County Chairman Will M. Peterson says the gathering will not be a nominating convention and will not pick a slate, though a banquet may follow to assist the event.
