New YorkMarch 12 The International Mercantile Marine posted a notice that American passenger and freight vessels will resume sailing with armed protection. Ships New York Philadelphia and others already equipped with gun mounts. Pin land and Kroenhind require heavy alterations.
Washington March 12 The State department modified all foreign diplomats here that American gunners will be placed aboard all United States merchant ships entering the barred zone. The announcement followed Secretary of State resignation conference with President Wilson. The government intends to arm munitions ships. methods for detecting submarines are suggested. The armament of merchant ships is to begin shortly as protection for war crooms and passengers aboard all American merchantmen sailing in the barred zone.
Mexico City March 15 General Venustiano Carranza was yesterday elected President of Mexico by an overwhelming vote. Voters could write any name, but Carranza received all but a few scattered ballots. Estimates put the total vote from several hundred thousand to a million. The election was orderly with no reported intimidation or disturbances. The constitutional assembly had provided for the election at Querétaro, and reporters noted it as a landmark event in Mexican history.
Chyrien A Towne former United States senator from Minnesota and his bride, Mrs Elkin of Washington, are on their honeymoon today after a wedding at Towne's Riverside Drive home in New York City. Mrs Elkin is the daughter of the late Henry Reinhart of Los Angeles.
