Lincoln Letter Found on Broadway Near Post Office
A faded Lincoln letter dated November 21 1864 from the Executive Mansion Washington to Mrs. Bixby Boston is found among rubbish in New York. It contains Lincoln’s condolence for a mother whose five sons died in battle and praise for their sacrifice to freedom. The Portland Oregonian notes the letter is not new, recounting related Civil War anecdotes about Lincoln interceding to discharge a dying mother’s remaining son and contemporaneous views of Lincoln by Boston lawyer Richard Dana.
