Henry Lazinka, a Camas Prairie cattleman, tours the Gardena area near the state line of Oregon and Washington. Burlingame plans to complete a ditch to irrigate 6000 to 20000 acres, boosting land value from 60–100 to 200–260 dollars per acre with water. Lazinka and others hold about 1000 cattle in Camas Prairie awaiting pasture growth.
Bryson, formerly of this city, is now a candidate for justice of the peace in Eugene. He has lived in Eugene for the past three years as a resident of the area.
Walters, a Weston saloon keeper, was convicted of selling liquor to minors. Judge Eakin granted a new trial, ruling that the court erred by allowing the jury to consider illustrative evidence from a similar crime. District Attorney Phelps says Walters will be retried at once if convenient.
Last night the Pendleton Eagles marked their third anniversary with a large session and a banquet. Lodge president Lee Hold presided during the meeting while Judge Thomas FitzGerald acted as toastmaster at the banquet. Initiatory candidates included County Judge Bean and several county political hopefuls such as Commissioner T. P. Gilland, F. L. Hendley, Fred Showmaker, and C. W. Steen, among others.
Osborne Davey, 35, former Albany Oregon resident, died at 3 o clock last night at the county poor farm from a complication of troubles. His body, now at Radar undertaking parlors, will be shipped tonight on the Albany train for burial beside his mother. He had been in and around the city before being taken to the poor farm.
Eugene Richter, veteran radical leader and longtime opponent of Bismarck, is dead this morning in Berlin. Born in a period of upheaval, he led reform efforts and influenced German politics for decades, leaving a marked legacy in conservative liberal circles.
At the Umatilla agency a council will meet Monday to decide action against mange in horses. Major Edwards says a strong effort will blot out mange on the reservation, dipping lightly infected animals and shooting hopeless cases. Federal inspectors handle the roundup planned for spring to treat all afflicted horses.
Sacramento reports an extra freight engine explosion near Gold Run on the Southern Pacific line at 11:30 pm. Fireman W F Austin of Rocklin and Brakeman W W Fraser of Sacramento died. Engineer Frank Doran of Rocklin was fatally injured after being blown 200 feet and crushed. Seattle item notes two firemen fatally injured in a basement fire at Merle and Heaney, caused by elevator collapse during hose laying.
Boise March 10 Attys for the Western Federation of Miners prepare a habeas corpus petition to free Vincent St John president of the Burke Idaho Miners Union held without an indictment since February 19 for Sleunenberg murder. Prosecution says he awaits grand jury action and may be discharged if the grand jury adjourns without indictment. Federation seeks to carry Moyer and others to the U S Supreme Court if Idaho rules against them. The decision is expected Monday.
National miners officials say a near certainty of a large scale strike by April 1 looms despite prior talks. A daily newspaper will be issued to members as the miners’ convention convenes to decide plans and publish updates.
In Visita Cal March 10 Tino Mex foams, Joan Peres and Jose Ortega quarrelled over a woman. Perez stabbed Ortega, who grabbed an ax and struck Perez. Perez then stabbed Ortega repeatedly in the back and neck, inflicting severe wounds. Peres was arrested and taken to hospital. George Manefield is reported missing from his farm on Birch Creek.
San Francisco March 10 Michael Haley died attempting to clear a blind sewer at Peltom and 7th streets at noon. Fellow worker Haley Jr. and plumber Frank Vivien were overcome but later revived in hospital. crooks present were also overcome.
Boston reports storm damage nearly destroying coastal traffic. Three electrocutions occurred as fallen wires killed one city resident. In Jefferson City, Mo, Harry Vaughn George Aron and Ed Raymond, convicts who killed gateman John Clay in the penitentiary mutiny, were sentenced to be hanged April 2 after an appeal was granted.
In a 40 mile per hour gale this afternoon Charles Levee a French aviator and Lee Stevens an American begin prep for an ascent. A man was found dead on a Marengo Illinois railroad track with a single photograph as clue. "Wealth of love" Vinnie Miller referenced from Grand Encampment Wyoming.
Pendleton residents organize a relief drive for famine stricken areas of Japan. Rev. Robert Warner receives an initial $50 donation from J. H. Mumford to start the fund, with further contributions urged via local churches tomorrow. Walla Walla already contributes money and provisions and the O R N Company offers free transport to the coast.
A large steamer, likely a passenger vessel, ran aground northwest of Wehant about 27 miles from Brest. She had ventured off the usual American European liner route. Later reports say the steamer was ashore in a collier. The crew was rescued.
Charges of malfeasance against District Attorney Halverson were dismissed. Former Mayor Glassman, who had opposed the court's jurisdiction, has been arrested for contempt for criticizing the court.
Robert Chadwick and Frank Hinkley were captured by police in Utah this morning during a hold up at a saloon. A fierce fight ensued and the two alleged criminals were beaten.
Chicago wheat prices in the market today show wheat at 77 1 4 cents, corn at 42 1 2 cents, and oats at 29 3 4 cents. The report lists settlements from the Great Wheat Center in Chicago on March 14.

Paris reports a coal mine disaster near Cadols where 1800 workers entered the shaft and a fire damp explosion trapped about 1400.
