Indians Face Cattle Market Move on Sioux Lands
St Paul report says opening of the Standing Rock and Cheyenne reservations to settlement will push about 225000 cattle onto market. About 60000 Indian cattle from Standing Rock and 40000 from Cheyenne, plus 80000 to 100000 leased cattle, will be driven out as land becomes tillable and sold at open bids from 8 to 20 dollars an acre. Sioux incomes range from 600 to 7000 annually from rentals, cattle, horses, and sales. last year beef and horse sales yielded about 210000. The move is framed as conversion of grazing grounds to farms, with the Indians predicting higher land values and accepting compensation.
