A full grown cow led by Herman Rosenberg bolted from Main Street into A. L. Schaefer's jewelry shop near noon. The steer veered to the door missing major exits, upsetting show cases but causing little damage and no injuries beyond shock to the proprietor and staff.
Washington reports senators holding lavish suites in the capitol and senate office buildings must surrender. Democrats press for parity with Republicans amid criticism of Republican greed. Senator Jonathan Bourne of Oregon allegedly had two rooms in the capitol and six in the office building plus six clerks, far exceeding others. Bourne will lose the extra quarters though remaining on payroll for another year.
Swiss bank group arranges a loan of six million francs at 7.5 percent with Servia. Repayment due within three months after peace is signed between the Balkan allies and Turkey.
Baltimore Md March 8 Not more than thirty persons died in the explosion of three hundred tons of dynamite at Curtis Bay with seventy injured. Twenty bodies reached the morgue as cold weather may delay recovery. John Goodhue in a launch saved eight people and tugs from Curtis Bay saving everyone aboard the tug Atlantic. The navy collier Jason wrecked with the steamer Alumchine and the tug Atlantic. Monetary loss put at two hundred thousand dollars.
Elizabeth Wilson eight, daughter of Captain Alfred Wilson and president’s grandniece, praised President Wilson on the presidential reviewing stand. Chief Justice White joked that he made him president, then surprised her with a candy box after their exchange amid the parade.

Dr Max Landesman director of the Peoples hospital defended Dr Friedmann saying he is sincere and not a faker. He noted Friedmann insists on clear records for every treated case and selection of tuberculosis patients, promising to treat a hundred TB cases once case histories are compiled.
Resolutions opposing U S intervention in the Mexican revolution were adopted by the San Francisco labor council. Copies will be sent to President Wilson Secretary Bryan and to Congress. The preamble says US capitalists with investments in Mexico drive the agitation for intervention.
Standard Oil of New Jersey stock offered on curb at 3.36, down 20 points overnight amid weak bids. Unease over policy of Secretary McReynolds contributed to the decline in New York trading.
County court session approves immediate macadamizing of the Wild Horse road from Pendleton to Eastland a twelve mile stretch. Two crushers will operate from each end with completion targeted for early next year. The Wild Horse hill cut, underway for a year, will finish this month, making the road a leading county thoroughfare.
Richland girls defeated Pendleton high school by 18 to 12 in a tight season finale. The Pendleton squad struggled with a small gym and a pipe over the basket, while Lillian Gulliford and Claire McDonald led the home team scorers. Coach Ruth Wise praised Pendleton’s best game of the season as they finish interscholastic play, with Richland heading to Wallula after the contest.

Halifax March. A story from the Huntington to Robinettrain line recounts two ladies boarding at Robinette and asking to stop at a ranch. The conductor halted the train for their visit, they returned, and one noted the road was most accommodating. Earlier, Dr Saunders of Halfway reportedly saw a horse from the car and the crew stopped again for a purchase.
Minneapolis student John Idle remains alive and conscious after a wrestling match where his neck was broken. Doctors say paralysis is total and death could come at any time. The incident occurred in Minneapolis in March, with Idle at the university.
A herd of twenty five elk from Jackson Hole Idaho is arriving in Salt Lake this afternoon. They will be exhibited along the Denver Rio Grande track at Fifth West and Second South streets before being sent to the Fish Lake and Sevier national forests. Byron Hinchett led the transfer for the state game and fish department and the elk were obtained from the United States biological survey. A second herd of twenty five will arrive within a week and be released on the Mount Nebo forest in Juab county.
A seven foot wingspan mammoth eagle was trapped near Erwin by F L Horan and killed after being grounded by a coyote trap. Horan presented the specimen to the Herald and proposed offering it to the local Aerie of Eagles at their meeting tonight for action.
San Francisco March 8 San Francisco labor council reports the Mine Workers of America wired President Wilson and Secretary Bryan demanding a federal investigation into West Virginia coal mine conditions. They say Mother Jones and several workers face trial under court martial for alleged riot and murder incitement, denying civil trial.
The pope is reported to be suffering from grippe with bronchial complications. Vatican officials say audiences have been indefinitely postponed due to his illness.
L F Dunn of the A B C Laundry is elected exalted ruler of the La Grande lodge with T J Scroggin as grand lodge representative and H E Coolidge as alternate. Other officers include M B Donohue leading knight and A C Williams lecturing knight. A large attendance attended the banquet after the election.

The infant, still in the perambulator stage, gazes at the grand chandelier with crystal pendants while lying centerspread in the stately chamber.
Rome, March. The Rota tribunal has reversed its ruling on the Castellane-Gould marriage, requiring the Senatura tribunal to render the final decision, which will take another year. Duchess de Tallyrand appeals to protect her children’s rights after divorcing Count Boni and marrying the Duc de Tallyrand, previously Prince Helle de Sagan.
After 38 hours and 40 minutes the Darrow trial jury could not agree on a verdict for bribing Robert F Bain in the McNamara case. Eight for conviction, four for acquittal. Darrow voiced resolve to fight, friends pledged support. deputies cleared the courtroom as the crowd dispersed. Judge Conley set March 31 for a new trial.
President Wilson offered Richard Olney of Beaton the ambassadorship to England today in Washington. Olney, long a statesman, would head the British mission if confirmed, reflecting a high level of trust in the former attorney general.
