South Bend, Wash. March 4 A dramatic rescue ends in tragedy as Mrs Allen Hall lofts her infant to her husband then leaps from a second story window to escape flames that engulf their Nob Hill residence, one of the city’s finest homes, totally destroyed with nothing saved.
The Smith for Governor Club in this city expanded to forty members and planned a voter registration drive for primaries. Mrs. G. M. Rice was chosen president, with Mrs. Laura Nash as vice-president and Miss Jenny Perry secretary. An advisory board was named and a second meeting is expected within a week, aiming to reach 160 members. The non-partisan group unites members from multiple parties to support Dr. C. J. Smith’s gubernatorial candidacy. The Tidewater mill at Florence will saw 100000 dollars worth of logs this spring.
Andrew Pooley an Englishman and Hewater's news agency agent in Japan was arrested in Tokyo in a graft scandal linked to the Japanese navy. He is charged with selling documents for 125,900 dollars. Pooley's wife attempted suicide while police searched their home. she recovered. The affair sparked parliamentary debate amid censored reports.
A telegram to President J. V. Tallman of the Commercial Association reports strong odds that a bill to authorize a $60,000 appropriation for a federal building in Pendleton will pass this session as an emergency measure. New York police surprised four burglars while they worked on a Bowery jewelry store safe. The men hid behind a counter and held officers at bay for hours before being overpowered. The safe yielded gems worth about $60,000. The criminals were described as among the country’s most notorious.
Report that Spanish residents in northern Mexico protested before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee against ongoing conditions in their territory. The denial persisted. Senator Fall of New Mexico escorted the visitors. Several Mexicans told the committee the situation was intolerable and that life and property needed protection.
In Sacramento on March 4 Norm Roke six year old was ordered to return to Portland to face theft charges involving jewelry and clothing valued at $400. Governor Johnson issued extradition papers despite defense arguments that no schoolmate wished to prosecute. The girl was brought to the hearing with her mother and maintained her innocence.
Thomas Ht Sheridan, former president of the First National Bank of Roseburg, turned himself in to federal authorities in Portland on a eight count indictment alleging a $18 020 defalcation with DA Reames predicting total losses near $76 000. The bank later merged into Douglas National in 1911. Sheridan, arraigned, was released on 6000 bond. The case links to prior Roseburg forgery and false pretense charges, with a trustee liquidating the bank.
Alzamon Ira Lucas of Walla Walla spoke to a packed Oregon theater crowd last night defending himself against ministers who call him a bad egg and accuse him of devil worship and immoral literature. He challenged proof by placing 1000 dollars in gold on a table for any accuser to claim with evidence. He denounced what he called archanity and urged his own form of worship as superior.

Hiram Gill elected mayor by an overwhelming majority over James D. Trenholme in Seattle. Gill carried all but one ward with 35 916 votes to 23 107 for Trenholme. He supports strict law enforcement amid a recall history and favors the commission form of government. Gill, 48, Wisconsin born, is praised for a strong campaign and gains in official returns from eighty four precincts.
St Paul March 4 Louis Hill will not remain permanently as president of the Great Northern. He took the post expecting to hold it only until a suitable successor is found. Rumors arise that Carl Gray resigned due to pressure. The board of education plans a first class gymnasium and a swimming tank for Marehfield high school.
President Wilson will address Congress tomorrow to advocate repeal of the exemption for American shipping from Panama canal tolls. Officials say the message will be brief and that the president views the exemption as a treaty violation, urging the United States to honor its obligations in letter and spirit.
In New York World interview General Carranza defies intervention, says it would spark war and deepen Latin American hostility. He notes Benton’s death was a malicious act by an enemy of Villa and that Britain bears only formal representations. Carranza plans to wait for Juarez commission report before commenting further.
