Thousands cheered as Leo entered in white red and gold robes, carried in a jeweled chair. Monks and bishops led a ceremonial procession while the crowd cried Long Live the Pope the King and Long live the Pope. The pontiff gave a blessing with visible emotion and waning voice.
The twenty four year jubilee of Pope Leo XIII was marked by pomp and ceremony in Rome. The Sistine Chapel and St Peter's Basilica overflowed with cardinals bishops dignitaries and thousands of spectators including many Americans. The crown presentation to the pope featured a gold enamel crown with diamonds and rubies. Cardinal Rampolla officiated and Respighi delivered the citation. The pope met with sovereigns and received messages while the basilica and grounds filled with worshipers and sightseers. Pope Leo XIII Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci was born March 2 1810 and became pope February 1878.
Across the nation today special Catholic services honor Pope Leo as the silver anniversary of his coronation is observed. At St Patrick's Cathedral Corrigan officiated the morning rites, which featured elaborate ceremonies and concluded with a public prayer for the pope.

Passaic reports six missing from Saddler river bridge. New York celluloid factory explosion injuries and fatalities total twelve with three missing. Mrs Durango among the injured dies.
Winston Churchill's dramatization of The Crisis will be seen on stage in Pittsburg tonight, produced by James K. Hackett with Hackett playing Stephen Brice. After Pittsburgh, the play moves to St. Louis where the story is set.
New Iberia La March 3 The Elkes street fair opened today under auspicious circumstances with business streets profusely decorated and many visitors in town. Delegations of Elks are expected this week from New Orleans Beaumont Crowley Lake Charles Houston and other cities.
Worcester Massachusetts March 3 The largest carpet loom in the world is being built here for shipment to England. It is of the Moquette-Axminster type and will weave a carpet twelve feet wide, three feet wider than any power loom attempt. The ordinary loom is one yard wide, but the new loom will make twelve foot square rugs possible.
Waco Texas March 8 the corner stone of the Carroll addition to Baylor university was laid today with ceremonies. Addressed by prominent educators and Baptist divines from the estate.
Norfolk Virginia on March 3 reports the street car strike reaching a critical stage with eight militia companies in the armory awaiting orders.
