Chicago March 2 The Tribune denounces the Senate vote exonerating Lorimer calling it a costly victory bought by big interests. It notes the corrected vote leaves Lorimer a four vote majority and warns that Root urged rejection of testimony showing corruption in Lorimer's seat.
Scranton March 2 The government suit against the Correspondence Institute of America for alleged mall fraud will be heard tomorrow, with Commissioner Searle to render a decision. The institute taught drawing by mail and testimony from students and educators supports its value. The action has cost the institute about $10,000 and deprived around 100 people of employment.
Secretary of War Dickinson set a March 6 meeting with all parties to discuss freight rates on the Panama railroad from Pacific to Atlantic. The move aims to resolve a rate war among Pacific Mail Steamship, Southern Pacific Railroad, and the California and Atlantic Company. Independent claims Southern Pacific seeks to freeze it out and form a monopoly. San Francisco shippers back the Independents.
Helena March 2. If no United States senator is elected today the Montana legislature will expire by constitutional limits leaving the office vacant. A deadlock continues on the fifth ballot with Walsh and Conrad expected to withdraw and support former Congressman Hartman, potentially electing him.

Washington March 2 Interstate Commerce Commissioner Lang predicted railroads will submit to the recent rate decision within a week. He said Eastern and Western railroad representatives have informally notified the commission they will comply and believes the rest will follow.
New York March 2 William War ing the millionaire socialist sued for 100000 for breach of promise by Anna Grunspan spent hours on the witness stand cross examined by plaintiffs lawyers. Attorney Strickler intimated Walling perjured himself and tried to show he was a lawyer who grasped the legal aspect of relations with the woman while traveling in Europe with her. Walling said he never mentioned marriage in any word or letter.
Tarrytown N Y March 2 By a strong and well timed finish the 40 hens of Marcus Johnson of Glenville won a $600 wager for him during February Johnson bet that 60 hens would lay 1060 eggs in February It was a close call but every hen laid an egg each day making 1009 for the 28 days
San Francisco March 2 Jack Johnson the pugilist came near going to jail today for auto speeding. Judge Conlan offered him a ten day sentence or a 2100 fine. The judge initially fined him $200 but Johnson, claiming to be a lawyer, argued the maximum fine is $100, and the judge reduced the fine accordingly.
In Harriburg Pa March 2 the state central committee met at the Board of Trade building to discuss reorganizing the Democratic party. Leaders say there is a chance to carry Pennsylvania next year if a concerted and harmonious campaign begins immediately.
Major Frederick Russell Burnham leads a South Africa bound expedition to import wild animals and fowl to America to boost food supply and counter the leather trust. Backers include Gifford Pinchot John Hays Hammond and R F Broussard. The plan envisions bush buck and other hardy varieties adapted to semi arid western U S conditions.

Baker Oregon March 2 Three posses scour the countryside for two men who Tuesday robbed the Stockman's Exchange saloon at Haines and shot Edward McCullough dead. Bloodhounds join the search as pursuers gain toward Baker. A posse left Haines yesterday and another from Baker at 10 am to intercept the men before they reach town. No trace found yet but capture is hoped soon.
From St Petersburg dated March 2 Professor Julius Beckmann of Vienna warns the Manchurian plague, touching villages swept bare, may cut China’s population by one third to one half. He says no survivors in some villages and fears spread to Europe and Russia unless desperate measures halt it.
Report from Shanghai dated March 2 indicates about three thousand natives die daily in plague and fever districts. Relief workers who arrived from the interior corroborate the grim tally and ongoing mortality.

Mrs. W. C. Price, 70, widow of a Civil War veteran, will graduate this spring from a local commercial college with a stenography and typewriting diploma. She started last September, attends five days weekly, and has missed only one session. After graduation she plans a homestead in Oregon and aims to open an office in a nearby town. Price has long been active in the equal suffrage movement since 1880, and was the second woman to register in Spokane when suffrage was granted.
Denver March 2 Urban Walter editor of the Harpoon and arrested by federal authorities for attacks on President Taft and Postmaster General Hitchcock is released on bail pending a March 7 hearing. Walter says postal authorities used technicalities to arrest him to halt the paper’s campaign for better railway mail clerk safety. He vows the Harpoon will continue its protest. David Still of Walla Walla arrived yesterday.
Dr M B Kern said the reclamation service will push the Umatilla extension with about 100 workers on site. Survey crews cross sections and dig test pits to assess water holding soil, with tents in use and lumber shipments for housing crews and boarding pits.

Olympia March 2 Colonist day for Washington is set for March the fifth by Governor Hay. Supporters urge all old residents to write letters to eastern friends highlighting Washington and the northwest for homeseekers. Oregon held a colonist day on March 1 and thousands of letters were sent east.
N J Levinson has purchased all stock of the Fresno Publishing company including the Fresno Herald. Levinson, long a member of the editorial staff at the Portland Oregonian, now assumes ownership of the Fresno newspaper.
Former Chief Forester Pinchot charged Senator Heyburn of Idaho and Carter of Montana with leading a plot to cripple the national forestry service through jokers on the agriculture appropriation bill. He spoke at a lumbermen convention in Washington urging them to flood the bill with pressure, and the group adopted a resolution asking Taft to veto the entire measure as it stands in conference.
Chicago March 2 official canvass of the mayoralty primary began today. Former Mayor Dunne claims police returns are crooked and expects to be nominated by the Democrats over Harrison. If Dunne wins Harrison may run as an Independent. Dunne will pursue the time course if Harrison wins.

They anticipate orders to begin double-tracking Portland to Huntington, part of a 75 million dollar budget, with projected yearly spends above five million for several years.
