Right to Criticise Libel Suit Verdict
The jury in a libel case for 100000 dollars brought by L B E Jones, former county auditor, against the Ohio State Journal, Columbus, returned a verdict for the defendant. The Journal touted the decision as vindicating press freedom to expose public office misconduct. The paper claimed the county auditor’s office over four years showed indifference to public interest and personal graft. It also alleged probate court inventories were used to glean information on omitted property for which tax inquisitors earned thousands. Jones argued the Journal’s charges were false.
