Bold Gang Caught in Utah Bounty Fraud Scheme
San Francisco officials pursue $16,000 of $18,000 stolen from Utah state treasury through a large bounty swindle. John Gorman and John Meyers, with false aliases, are jailed in Salt Lake City while two deputy county clerks reportedly aided the scheme by paying bounties on the same hides multiple times. The ring used mutilated hides and counterfeit names to drain bounties on coyote and wolf skins, with payments sometimes made on ten skins for a hundred bounties. The operation allegedly spanned several western states and aimed at California treasury theft.
