Cincinnati marks a presidential election mood as Taft arrives to a massive ovation. Sherman and Taft aides meet a hopeful crowd, with the subcommittee debating a permanent campaign chair. Hitchcock declines, leaving the national committee chair unsettled as Morgan backs Taft.
Gan who arrived from Europe today voiced pleasure at Secretary Taft's nomination. He said it is good but declined to discuss politics or other subjects.
Louis Ferris, a 17 year old youth, was acquitted in Butte Mont on murder charges linked to the May 1 Burlington wreck. The defense argued the confession was coerced by third degree methods, amid claims of promises of favors to obtain a confession. Other murder counts against Ferris remain.
Topeka Kansas June 4 Santa Fe locomotive shops were ordered closed for the entire day and will affect over 1000 men in Topeka. Scarcity of work is given as the cause.
Pendleton faces no move to force shops to close Sundays as saloonmen and prohibition foes seek spiteful action. District Attorney Phelps warns cases will go to the grand jury, with arrests unlikely for permanent residents and bonds for transients. The state Sunday closing law allows mercy defenses, often leading to acquittals and few indictments.
About 20 steel bridges washed out over an 80 mile stretch between Butte and Garrison Montana, routing through traffic to O R and N. Regular NP trains will run on O R and N routes while repairs continue over several weeks. The flood damage is estimated above one million dollars and up to 500 passengers were moved via alternate lines.
James Schoolcraft Sherman, Republican vice presidential nominee, is a Utica native born October 24, 1855. He was a Hamilton College graduate admitted to the bar in 1878, served as Utica mayor, presided over Republican conventions, and served in Congress where he opposed the Panama Canal but allied with Roosevelt. He led fundraising in Congress, backed Speaker Reed, and introduced notable measures including the anti ticket scalping bill.
On June 20 the Hamburg liner Arcadia exploded on board sending a fire raging through the vessel. Chief Officer Kruger, badly burned on face and hands, rushed into flames to save others, carrying out two dead and sixteen injured. A roll call found several missing and many jumped overboard presumed drowned. Thirty individuals were aboard when the blast occurred. fireboats battled the blaze as the ship settled into mud near the dock after returning from Hamburg.
Representatives from every financial institution in Umatilla County gather at the Hotel Bowman for a 6 pm dinner to organize a county bankers’ association. Local banks will be represented and out of town financiers are arriving, with plans formed for mutual benefit and better understanding.
President Theodore Roosevelt, with wife Edith, daughter Ethel, and son Quentin, left Washington for their annual Oyster Bay vacation. Secret Service guarded departure as Loeb and Forrester accompanied the party while Latta stayed at the White House. Roosevelt called his term a perfectly working time and thanked the American people for the opportunity to serve.
San Francisco June 20 Metcalf announces he will retire from public life after the current administration ends and resume the practice of law returning to the Pacific coast. He denies any plan to run for United States senator and dismisses rumors of challenging Perkins. He praises the Taft Sherman ticket as exceptionally strong.
J H Parker vice president of First National Bank Baker City, a major eastern Oregon banker, was arrested on two indictments charging willful and corrupt perjury in timber land claim cases. He appeared before U S Commissioner C A Moore and posted 3000 dollars bond. Senator Ankeny of Washington serves as bank president.
Panama June 20 News reports arrangements to place United States marines on the isthmus in Coroxal camp. They could be moved to Panama within minutes if needed as tension rises over the republic's political situation.
Representatives of labor organizations from the District of Columbia called at the White House to urge the president to deliver a farewell address to labor on Labor Day next September. The president will consider the request.
Vallejo Calif June 20 Mrs F M Hodgman of this city near death from razor slashes in a singular accident. Standing with one foot on a chair she lost balance and slashed her left arm to the bone from palm to elbow. In snatching the razor from the wound she nearly severed her fingers of the right hand. She was brought aid but the bleeding could not be stopped and she was in serious condition with little hope of recovery.
The U S S Georgia at sea on June 20, averaged 18.02 knots for a nine hour pace in light seas and 19.92 knots under forced draft on a four hour run south from Cape Flatery. The ship, heavily loaded, drew three feet eight inches more water yet surpassed its builder’s trial speed. No other battleship in the navy has matched this record.
The district eighth grade examining board completed grading with 15 of 38 passing. Hazel Dowd led all with 90 percent, while 28 applicants who had failed earlier also took the test. The list names successful examinees by district and student.
Seattle June 20 A special dispatch reports the body of David Bergman found by a Northwest Mounted Police river search near Dawson Y T Bergman from Seattle was killed by four bullets in the head during a June 16 attack by Ned Elfors on Emil Anderson Bergman’s killer and Anderson both survived the shooting and are recovering
Five more indictments against Umatilla county men were returned by the federal grand jury. Deputies served warrants today. McDonald and Raley remain at large. Parkes Bowman and Adams face bonds while others await arrest or in mountains with sheep.
El Paso reports additional arrests of alleged revolutionaries in Nuevas Casas Grandes Mexico. Thirty are jailed including Santa Ana Perez, leader of the 1898 Temosachic uprising when Palomas customs house was raided. Chihuahua troops stand ready to move to the scene.
Last evening the Pilot Rock Fourth of July committee arranged to have Rev W H Bleakney president of Pendleton Academy deliver the oration at Pilot Rock on the Fourth. Bleakney is a pleasing and forceful speaker and his address will be the chief feature of the celebration.
The Presbyterian church of Pilot Rock is fully organized with officers elected including Elder for three years H. H. Gilbert and trustees W. A. Gilliam John P. McManus and Miss Eva Beits. The church will maintain the official tithe and a pastor will be chosen at the earliest opportunity.
Tucson June 20 report says Yaquis and Mexican troops clashed at a water hole between Guaymas and Hermosillo. Several soldiers were killed after the troops, in pursuit of the Yaquis, ran into an ambush. The pursuit continues as Yaquis are believed active in the area.
The federal building site will be chosen after July 16 when bids open in Washington. At least seven locations have been offered in town, including Livermore property at Court and Johnson, C F Colesworthy at Alta and Cottonwood, Sloan block near The George Darveau at Webb and Cottonwood, congregational church lot at Webb and Johnson, and homes of Dr. W G Cole and Mrs. T G Halley, north of the river. Prices for these sites were not disclosed.
