Forty four refugees arrived in San Francisco aboard a British steamer with graphic tales of chaos in Mexico. They say bandits and rebels loot towns while federales hold some areas, and many Americans seek to flee as conditions worsen and normal business stalls.
A blaze at the Barber hotel in Chico California killed two men Flander Loo mis and Bert Sullinger and badly injured about 20 others. Firemen rushed to rescue guests who leaped to the street as flames spread through the building. Frank Loomis, son of one of the deceased, almost lost his wife while trying to save his father. The Diamond Match company plant nearby was saved after a strenuous fight.
Colorado Springs reports Judge Smith of McPherson Iowa read a paper at the National Press Association defending newspapers rights to criticize courts. The message condemned the California land bill and stated state rights are subordinate to treaty obligations. It claimed some courts punish editors for articles they dislike and that such practice is now nearly obsolete.
Denver June 19 The jury in the second Henwood trial for the killing of George J Copeland returned a first degree murder verdict late yesterday and set the death penalty The shooting in a hotel bar room May 24 killed Copeland and James Atkinson while Sylvester Von Phul died earlier In the first trial Henwood got second degree murder with life imprisonment The Colorado Supreme Court reversed and remanded for a new trial and the defense then had the Von Phul charge dismissed for time limits The Copeland case faced further jeopardy issues

Echo Ore June 19 Orrin Halstead 22, a well known local youth, fell from a cherry tree when a limb broke and was precipitated to the ground. He landed on his head and shoulders, suffered severe bruising and shock, but no bones were broken.
The Denver and Rio Grande car repair shops in Salt Lake City were completely destroyed by fire, with damages estimated at 250000 dollars. Three firemen were injured in the blaze.
