Heroes honored by Carnéele fund award for daring rescues
West Virginia locomotive engineer Pierce D. Marsh earned a silver medal and 1000 to pay a mortgage after guiding his train to safety from seven runaway coal cars near Jane Lew on June 25, 1907. A Raleigh Indiana neighbor, Mrs. Amilo Cone, received a silver medal for rescuing Eveline Smith from a burning hut. Frederick Walker of Braddock, Pa, saved a trapped man in a well and earned bronze. John Carruthers of Baltimore & Ohio received a bronze medal and 10000 to aid a home after saving a child dragged under a cowcatcher on July 22, 1907. Other rescues include Lenk and Lautenschlager diversions in canal incidents, Koons and Lautenschlager saves, and John Scareman who saved a Keller boy from an electrified line, earning medals and funds to cover debts.
