Chicago records a severe heat wave pushing fatalities to six in 50 hours. Prostrations mount as residents seek shade in parks while cities like Milwaukee report five deaths. At noon the thermometer neared ninety nine degrees, with no relief seen.
G D Trapani a Los Angeles merchant told police of 11 years of Black Hand persecution. His home was blown up today by Peppino Principe. Trapani, hospitalised with severe burns, said attackers once forced him from New Orleans Seattle and San Francisco and demanded 1099 under threat of death. He resisted, prompting the latest explosion.
R R wants city to take a fifteen year lease on the vacant block near the depot with no city remuneration to the railroad beyond maintaining parking. If accepted, the city could sublease to concessionaires to raise funds to shape the ground. The county fair board opposes altering its revenue lease rights, which currently yield about 1200 annually during the fair and Round-up.
London on June 14 suffragette leaders agreed to be held responsible for damages caused by followers after Mr and Mrs Pethlck Lawrence accepted judgment awarding them 7000 dollars for raids in Piccadilly and other market centers.
In a June 16 decision the Supreme Court largely upholds Missouri's two cent passenger rate and maximum freight rate laws as not confiscatory for six principal roads that challenged them, while finding confiscation for several small roads. The ruling follows a Minnesota case precedent.
U S Breanbaugh admits writing a letter to Senator Works offering $1000 to secure the Santa Barbara postmastership. He says he did not know his act was wrong and was asked why he burned the letter, replying it was a schoolboy trick. He faces arraignment today. In a separate San Francisco case, five police officers linked to the Banco scandal plea changes led to nine month sentences. Judge Lawlor cited leniency for aiding state expenses. Charles Taylor and Arthur Masphee opt for trial on conspiracy charges. Frank Esola, already sentenced on a felony, pleads guilty to conspiracy.
In Poughkeepsie on June 16 the four oared varsity crew from Pennsylvania narrowly avoided disaster after colliding with Wisconsin while both boats practiced for the Saturday regatta. Syracuse crew came to the rescue. Wisconsin boat will be repaired in time. Pennsylvania shell was demolished and the crew must borrow a shell for the race.
Pendleton lodge No 285 observed Flag Day with a ritual program and music. Exalted Ruler Cheshire led the ceremony with officers. Judge Thomas Fite Gerald and Attorney Joe Skrable delivered readings. A male quartet of Mable Jordan Hayes and Mayberry performed, and the hall was decorated in national colors and lodge colors. Ladies attended by invitation.
Anita Baldwin McClaughey, heir to the late Lucky Baldwin, files divorce suit in Los Angeles amid a bitter custody battle over children Dextra and Baldwin. The feud features armed guards at a ranch near Sacramento and competing custody efforts by both parents. Mrs McClaughey inherited 5 million from her father.
The letter from railroad agent E H Strait describes Carl Swanson leaving a train at Eads Colorado while en route to Kansas City. He wandered for days across the prairie in a mentally unsettled state, gave conflicting answers when questioned, and later appeared in Marquette Kansas acting strangely. Relatives suggest temporary unbalance possibly linked to asthma and a severe headache.
New York June 16 Eleven lives believed lost in a cave in a 80 foot underground section of the Fifty Sixth street Lexington Avenue subway construction. Thirteen of thirty two miners entombed. six bodies recovered by 10 30 PM Saturday. five still buried. Two injured rescued, one likely to die. Five hundred laborers assembled to dig out the buried men. No hope of escape appeared.
Members of the Pendleton Deutsche Verin were entertained at German Hall with a social day including a ball game. The Irish and Dutch teams clashed in a 12 to 1 Dutch victory. Struve and Kilgore pitched for the Dutch. Ell officiated as umpire. The Irish squad included Stewart Phelps Penland Waffle Strahorn Hoch Gurdane Wilson and Hays. Strahorn hit the lone Irish home run.
In Oakland on June 16 a tandem motorcycle ridden by Joseph Sousa and Natalie Sutliffe collided with a cycle ridden by Westley Hoffett. Sousa and Sutliffe were killed instantly, while Hoffett died later from injuries.
Mrs Luella Nicholson a transferee from Trinidad Colorado asked police to locate her husband whom she said eloped with her elder daughter and abducted two younger children. She was jailed as a beggar after obtaining $190 from Judge Willis while awaiting vagrancy or lunacy proceedings. She used the name Mrs Ella Skinner and signed for property returned then left with $8 and valuables, later arrested and brought back to return the funds.
Portland June 16 Miss Jane Stearns science teacher at Washington High explains that the Biblical story of Adam and Eve is a myth from Jewish tradition that entered Genesis. When a pupil clung to the dust and rib tale she noted it is symbolic in light of scientific discoveries as students go home to protesting parents.
A wireless dispatch from Jolo reports American forces under General Pershing captured the last Moro defense at Bingdad after a dusk assault. Moros were larger in numbers than in the previous encounter as Perishing’s troops advanced into their ranks during the fighting.
Glendale Ore June 16 Ray Diamond walks into the state bank with a rifle and robs Assistant Cashier Smith, escaping toward the mountains with $4200. A posse is in pursuit and no trace has been found.

New York notes the death of former actress Della Fox in the city on June 16. She was married to Jack Levy and had a notable stage career before retiring from the stage.
Washington report on June 16 cites Henry Oxnard before the senate committee as to the cost of keeping free sugar on the table. Oxnard says sugar interests spent large sums fighting free sugar in the last 20 years and that the American Sugar Beet Association books were destroyed. He admits the disburser of funds was not required to render an accounting.
On Saturday night militants resumed the suffragette campaign with the largest raid on mail boxes yet. Twelve receptacles across town were attacked with chemists’ acid-filled test tubes dropped into damaged letters. A bomb sewn into an oil soaked cushion was found at Eden Park station in Kent, attached to a clock set to explode at 2 am Saturday. the clock had stopped when found.
President Wilson announced currency legislation will be launched this week in Congress, likely Friday, following talks with McAdoo and Senator Owen. He said leaders are united, a message is written, and the bill will debut in both houses, with uncertainty about timing of his message.

Charleston June 16. The coal regions of West Virginia remain far from settlement with a general strike strongly indicated. Mass meetings in Paint Creek and Cabin Creek districts urged miners to stay out. orders to return to work were generally obeyed. John P. White, president of the international miners, arrived to consult with unionists about the fresh strike amid accusations others violated a compromise brokered by Governor Hatfield.
