Pendleton prepares a two day Fourth of July celebration with a balloon ascension by Aeronaut Hall. The event aims for heights over 700 feet with parachute descent, paying the flyer $100 if the ascent occurs. Fundraising has reached about $1,600 with many donations listed from local businesses and individuals toward a $2,000 goal.
The OH, N, and Southern Pacific offer a one fare round trip to the Oregon G A R encampment at Grant Park. Pendleton travelers pay 18.80 dollars or one fare. Sales start June 18 for trains to Portland by June 19. Return by June 29. Open to all. not part of certificate plan. Many eastern Oregon members expected to attend.
The young nephew of Alex Bryant fractured his left elbow several days ago while at his home nine miles from the area. Dr. T M Henderson treated the injury.
Chicago June 15 Dowle’s appearance on the stand prompts Valilva to prove him insane. Dowle was recalled this afternoon. A noted alienist who has attended each Dowle appearance observed his actions and words with care.
Public officials educators and church leaders in Salem Oregon gathered to honor Jason Lee, the first Protestant missionary in the northwest, whose remains were reinterred from Canada where he died in 1846. The ceremony marked Oregon's preservation for the Union as his memory was held in high regard by the community.

Washington June 15 Special The post office department announced changes in Oregon postmasters salaries under the annual readjustment effective July 1. Increases include Junction City Lehman from 1200 to 1300 and Marshfield Medford from 1700 to 1900. Other boosts cover Ontario from 1100 to 1600 Oregon City 2200 to 2300 Pendleton 2400 to 2800 Nogebure 2000 to 2100 Silverton Woodburn 1400 to 1500 Wasco 1200 to 1400 and Sumpter from 1500 to 1600 Union 1600 to 2400.
Mrs Lizzle Thomas, wife of M T Thomas of Echo, died at the hospital around 10 last night from blood poisoning. A Nebraska native born Lizsle Criss, she was 28. The remains will be shipped to Aines in the morning for funeral services there tomorrow, with W A Cantrill of Baker Folsom parlor guiding the arrangements.
At a late hour in night the Episcopal State convention of the diocese of Oregon elected Rev Charles Scadding of La Grange Illinois bishop of the diocese to succeed the deceased B Wistar Morris who led the diocese for nearly fifty years. The R N company is building a new steel bridge across the John Day river near Arlington and will double the weight capacity of the structure. A masked man robbed the Club saloon bartender in Coeur d Alene taking about $60 and vanished.

Indian police keep constant patrols and Major Edwards pushes vigilance to curb the sale and transport of whiskey to the reservation, with decisive steps likely if city and state authorities fail to act.
Secretary Kauffman warns Puget Sound public and bankers about three men using bogus checks. A colored man 36 to 40 years old goes by John W. Scott or James Massey and forged a Ventura Bank check for 6270 signed by John H. Reppy. He fleeced Seattle and Tacoma stores, then failed in Tacoma real estate, later resurfacing in Seattle. Massey served 60 days in Ventura for petty offenses.
Insurance board members on the Pacific Coast raise rates about 25 percent across California Nevada Oregon Idaho Montana Utah and Arizona to recoup San Francisco losses. Washington remains outside the rate fixing, though the Anti-Compact law blocks rate agreements there. President Hagen notes messages were delayed and wires were down for miles around San Francisco.
